sister and friend
Hi everyone,
I am here seeking support and a place where I can learn about alcoholism and addiction. I have a 53 year old sister who is an alcoholic and takes prescription pills.
Nice to meet everyone.

I'm a recovering alcoholic and my sister is addicted to pills - but she says "I don't have a problem and I'm not an alcoholic like you" It's really hard to deal with it - especially when they do not think it's a problem. A lot of people don't view prescription pill abuse a problem, because they are prescribed. She has got pulled over for "driving under the influence" and swerving - still doesn't think she has a problem. Very difficult especially when I am in recovery. It's great you want to help her. Welcome.

Hi JaylaaKent,
I can't imagine how difficult it must be to listen to your sister say she doesn't have a problem when you are fully aware of what she is doing.
My sister has been to rehab for alcoholism twice and lost her license after 2 DUIs. She attended many AA meetings and I went to several of them with her. I would go to more but I live one state over and do not get to see her as often as I would like. She stopped going to her AA meetings and she has progressed to pills (prescribed anti-anxiety and sleeping pills, and suspected purchase of oxy) and continues to drink...just not as much as she used to. She adamantly denies having a problem with pills or alcohol although she had to be escorted out of her sons beautiful wedding reception (Oct 19). On the way home she admitted to me that she took 2 oxy and I saw her drinking wine. Today, she denies taking the pills and is telling Mama that her nodding off and strange behavior at the reception could have been caused by a seizure. Of course, Mama is trying so hard to believe her daughter..they live together and mom provides taxi service to/from her work everyday. I have to respect my mom...but I want to just shake her and wake her up and then I want to slam magic fairy dust on my sister and make her addiction go away! I just feel very frustrated and helpless/hopeless and want to scream!! Thanks for sharing with me JaylaaKent...you, and everyone in this online community, are wonderful and inspiring! I welcome any insight into this difficult and confusing world.

Seacatlady, i used to regularly mix painkillers and alcohol, which no one knew. It gave me twice the buzz without having to drink a ton.
I know it seems lame but i read an article on cnn.com about prescription drug abuse and it really scared me. Perhaps your sister might read it? Google "bill clinton painkillers." It was an interview.
