Keeping your side of the street clean.
Growing up at my grandmother's knee, she repeated this to me many times over the years.
Only, the wording was slightly different: "Make sure that your own stoop is clean before you worry about someone else's"
I take this to mean to put your energy to running your own life properly before sticking your nose into someone else's business. Stay out of other people's business.

Ha, my dad has always told me, "take care of yourself first and everything else will fall into place." That's not to say that life isn't going to be difficult sometimes, but if you have a solid foundation of self-worth and care, it's easier to get through it.

Lotta variations of the same, all from good sources --
Jesus 101: first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
Airline Attendant Safety Speech: put on your oxygen mask first before assisting others . . .
Medical (anti) Septic Practices: Lister -- Yeah -- Listerine [tm] a classic: Internet History Sourcebooks
