Through self sacrifice and service to others
Actually, the question might be deeper than that. My Big Book tells me I must get rid of this selfishness or it will kill me. So it's a serious issue. Further, it seems I don't seem to be able to make much progress trying on my own power. It appears I need a bit more power than I actually have. Hence the 12 steps, which are a path to connect me with a power that will solve my problem. This actually worked and I now find I enjoy self sacrifice and service to others. It's not a chore.
