Allen Carr book?
Hi, just wondered if anyone would recommend the Allen Carr book for giving up alcohol? That is my intention, however noticed the title is about controlling drinking rather than abstinence. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Ah, good old English irony... that title confused me, when I was still drinking and wanted to control my drinking. Needless to say I was disappointed when he didn't tell me how to control my drinking! I re read it sober and got a lot out of it, though I think I got more out of the smoking books. This guy totally changed the way I view addiction though. I don't think the book alone would have been enough for me, well it obviously wasn't, but it certainly helped.
Check out the founder of Moderation Management - Audrey Kishline.
I think the multi-state organisation is still around. Audrey is no longer involved.
Whether it is 10 days, or 10 years, Moderation is a MYTH and always eventually fails.

Agree with Dee. Don't let the title mislead you. It was one of the very best books I read when I first got sober and has been fundamental in changing my thinking about drinking. And keeping me sober.
It's also an easy read and entertaining. Highly recommend.

It is good for gaining a clear perspective on alcohol and its "benefits". I am reading Jason Vale's book now which is very similar, but to me, a bit more interesting to read.
Alcohol is not my "thing" (though I abused it, I was addicted to crack). However, I was totally addicted to cigarettes and got his book about quitting smoking.
To be honest, I read it more than once. It seemed simple, but I wasn't quite ready.
Fast forward to when I was ready. I've not smoked for 8 weeks, and a lot of the "tools" I use to keep moving forward, I learned from his book.
Again, I know it's not the same thing, but I'll be honest - quitting cigarettes was far harder than the crack. Crack is illegal, cigarettes - lots of people smoke.
In your case? Lots of people drink. I had to hit MY "I'm done with this" button, and all I'd read in the book really helped (along with SR).
Hugs and prayers,
Amy

I read two Allen Carr books:
"No More Hangovers"
"The Easy Way To Stop Drinking"
I LOVE his voice. He is like a lawyer(barrister?) setting up a case for a final conclusion that alcohol should be locked up forever. Great stuff.
I have many favorite sobriety books, but I'd have to put "Beyond the Influence" up there for those who like science. That book scared the alcohol out of me for quite a while.

I read it some years ago. I think the message can be summarised as 'alcohol is your enemy and not your friend and you are not giving up anything at all but dumping an enemy'.
I found it useful but I can't say it kept me sober back then.

I wanted to stop drinking like everyone reading this. So, I first read "The Easy Way To Stop Drinking" Read just a little everyday staying sober. Enjoyed it. Then after a month I started to go to AA. That worked too but I'm not much of going to AA but still better then drinking. After 6 months sober I found and read The art Of AVRT...well with all the combos giving to me at all the right times I just passed one year last week sober...Don't go to AA but it's nice to know it is there if needed and may go now and then if I have time, or think I need to. Anyway, this worked for me.
So read it..and don't worry about drinking, just don't drink the first drink..it's that easy.
