Can you believe it? I've reached one year sober!
Can you believe it? I've reached one year sober!
I'm not even sure what to say. Today is the 1 Year Anniversary of finding SR and deciding to get sober. On Oct 3rd, 2013 I drank four bottles of wine but vowed that it would be last I drank. Well, one year later and I haven't slipped at all.
It's hard to believe my life now. For kicks I went back and read my first posts, and it's amazing. That guy wouldn't have imagined that he could become me! The quiet desperation of my life has given way to genuine hope. School is going well, work is great and I'm living my life again. I'm truly free, maybe for the first time in my adult life. I wish you could all feel it! I hope you all do feel it. I hope you've found what I've found.
Looking back over the last year and my posts, I can't help but think of all those who joined before me and supported me when I was wobbly. I feel a pang of sorrow when I check the statistics to see how many are still here. Sure, some of the absent may have stayed sober and simply not needed SR any longer. I suppose some have faltered and returned to the bottle. To all of you who walked beside me, I hope the road you're on is a good one. If you encouraged me when I thought I couldn't go on, I offer you my thanks.
If you're new here then I'm talking just to you! Maybe this is the first day after a DUI, maybe it hit home that you can't go on this way. Probably you think there's no way you can do this, that you're doomed to be a drunk for the rest of your life. Well, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE, SAVE YOUR LIFE! You probably can't see it now, and you don't believe. You don't have to believe it, you just need a tiny bit of faith. Enough faith to take that first step.
I don't really count days but this one is pretty major. At no time in the last 25 years did I ever do a year without getting plastered. I feel like the Voyager Probe, heading out of the heliosphere into The Unknown! What will I find? I don't know! But for once I'm actually excited when I think of the future. If I live another 30 years or just 30 days I will actually live life. Sober.
Thanks to all you folks of SR! I couldn't have reached this point alone.

Congrats, MythOfSisyphus!
Great achievement and great post!
I love your Voyager metaphor! Whatever our sober unknown is , it's surely light years better than "drinking known".
Best wishes to you!
