I am really motivated by information on how alcohol directly effects our health. This was very helpful for me to read. Thank you!

I'm not trying to be glib here... I used to be really smart. Thoughtful, creative, excellent at memory retention. And then I got more and more stupid over time, and since quitting drinking, I feel like I've lost even more brain cells than ever. I hope it's just PAWS and I somehow regain the smarts I used to have. Or else I'm just getting old. Or else it's my children sucking the very lifeblood from my brainstem.... probably that.

Edited to say that after rereading what I wrote, I think I am being glib after all. Sorry...

Good news! For sobriety, anyway.

What an encouraging article! I have read that there "ain't no cure for stupid", but it seems that there may in fact be hope for those of us who have become, oh, less smart, as a result of our years of drinking. I guess I will make this reason #372 to stay sober.

This is a great article. I am not as sharp as I used to be. At work I miss things that I would never have missed before. I cant believe the things that happen when you drink. I get so discouraged but reading things like this gives me hope....

Yep, me too. I couldn't handle scaring myself like that in early recovery but these days I research as much as possible about the effects of alcohol on health and brain function. It's staggering how much this stuff really and truly is...poison.

Great stuff, Ach, thank you!!

Thank you! I used to make "jokes" about my old university studies saying I can't remember because "that was too many margaritas ago". Not so funny to me anymore. And I noticed I just started studying subjects I enjoy again. Great news!

Thanks for sharing these Acheleus. Salvaging my mind is uber important to me. I am so glad to see you being more proactive in your recovery. Something seems different this time...it really does.

I was a pretty heavy drinker for many years and I can say that after being sober for 16 months, much of my brain function has come back. At least enough that I have nothing to complain about.

I can definitely feel the fog lifting in the past 3 months. I used to smoke weed all day every day, and it definitely caused a lot more fog than alcohol imo. It was a big reason I quit smoking weed. I couldn't stand not remembering words, or what I was talking about all the time.
