Telling my doctor I'm an addict! Ah!

I have been avoiding this for several years now. I've been in treatment several times and they're ALWAYS recommending naltrexone/vivitrol and I declined because I've always had reservations that I'm going to want to relapse. Well, after a certain point you really get sick of life being such a nightmare and become willing to do things that make you uncomfortable.

So... now I have an appointment this week to come out of the closet and tell him about my problem, get on oral naltrexone for a month and then hopefully get the shot!

Working with your doctor to plan your recovery is a great idea, and naltrexone is used to help with cravings and urges. It doesn't stop you from drinking, if you are planning, thinking about, or contemplating drinking ever again. It sounds as though you don't really want to take the option of ever drinking again off the table.

What is your plan for your sobriety, apart from the naltrexone? I think there is more to a successful plan than a shot in the arm.
