Almost sober for a month

Hi,

I have been lurking and found support in reading these forums for about a month. I am not ready to spill my beans about everything to everyone just yet. My wife don't know that I quit drinking but I think she knows by me not being drunk since July 19. Thanks for understanding that I am very private about this for the time being. I'm feeling good but I know that the AV will come soon. This is probably my twentieth time quitting over the years. I have been drinking off and on since I was 12. I began alcoholic tendencies around age 19 and I'm now 46. Wish me luck.

Thanks everyone,

Thanks, I am feeling pretty good but I know that I'm getting closer and closer to the AV starting to bug me. I always feel real good right before a relapse. This time I'm determined not to give in. I have tried so many times before but for some reason this feels different. I was even sober for a whole year at one time. Although that was many moons ago.

Hi Tnman, welcome to SR. You'll find a lot of helpful information here, from how to deal with urges/cravings to different methods to fight and disarm the AV.

Big congrats on nearly a month sober - that's a significant accomplishment!

Welcome tnman!

Congratulations on almost one month of sobriety.

SR is here twenty-four hours a day for any encouragement you need.

Reading some of the posts on SR is usually all the encouragement I need to remain sober.

I understand the privacy thing, but your post is the first I've read of someone hiding their SOBRIETY from their spouse.

I hope she is very proud when you break the news to her!

Congrats on almost a month tnman!! Keep up the great work my friend!!!!
Great that you've found SR!

I had read your post a few days ago and it has wondered around in my mind since. As a first time sober alcoholic, I often wonder when those AV will come for me. Feeling confident in week 3 but know the realities of addiction.

Being respectful of your privacy & wo bringing up bad memories, do you have any advise or hindsight perspective for a newbie?

Is there a reason you are not telling your wife? Do you think she actually has noticed?

The best for you & your sobriety!

Well, I was quick to bring the news to her all the other times and tried and failed. So she is obviously not believing anything I say anymore pertaining to drinking. So I figure I'll keep it between my soul and my higher power. At least she is not upset anymore and acts more happy so I know deep down she knows I'm not drinking.

Yes, I don't want to bring any hopes to my wife anymore since I failed so many times before and then she began distrusting me when I said I was quitting. I figure action speaks louder than words. As for AV. Yes it can be triggered by happiness, sadness, tiredness, party invitations you name it. It usually begin in my head after a while of not drinking. You begin to think, why can't I have a drink like anyone else. Just one won't hurt blah, blah blah, Then you get on your pity pot and feel sorry for yourself not being able to drink. It's just a mind game really. You have to find other activities and something to occupy your mind when the AV and cravings shows up. It usually passes within thirty minutes or so for me.
