my mother
hello
my mother is in hospital finishing up a 5 day detox.
kind of a blessing in disguise that the initial reason she is in there is because she woke up in horrendous pain and thought she had broken a bone. but had to admit that she is an alcoholic and they are detoxing her (thank god)
but my concern is what happens after she is released?

Hi
I'm not sure I want to be there when she is discharged so I can talk to the doctor. They have said they are going to prescribe Librium which they say will make her ill if she drinks.
I have researched to other drugs that I guess are still experimental
Vivatrol and naltrexone, I'd like to ask the dr if these are an option for my mom?

Perhaps you are referring to Antabuse. I suggest you, your mother and your doctor discuss medications carefully and also exercise care that there are strict controls over the amount and renewal of any prescriptions which might become addictive.

Thank you and that was part of the problem, since. She wasn't honest with family dr about her drinking he had her on both Paxil and Zanex along with another 5 rx for high blood pressure, cholesterol etc couple those with straight vodka from morning till night I ( and the nurses at the hospital) say she is lucky to be alive!
