Hello there,
I just signed up today and am not quite sure the best way to get around it. I have problems with alcohol and am trying to cut back substantially. If anybody has any suggestions, anything would be appreciated, If you want to just say hello that would be nice, too.
Best wishes
Peter

I stopped drinking over 500 days ago with the help of SR.

I come here everyday, its a bit like my secret second home!.

There are many wise people who have been in your shoes who you can gain advice from.

I would suggest you read, read and read and post away as much as you like.

Many thanks for your message and welcome. I have to cut down but have split up with my girlfriend after 10 years which doesnt help, but we still spend about an hour a day talking on the phone which messes up my brain completely!
I will do as much reading as possible, which are good places to post?

Hi Lepalem and welcome to SR.

There is lots of info here and you will find lots of support and help here as well.

I wasn't one who could "cut" down on my drinks. I can't stop at one.

So far I have been sober now for a year. Believe me I didn't think I could do it in the beginning, but I did!

Congratulations I am impressed. Did you achieve that through using this site or by using other means as well?

Lots of different things. I finally saw a counsellor and he sent to daytox and it was a great program. I went for 4 weeks.

I also do Women for Sobriety meetings and I was doing SMART. I am also starting to do AA again as I want to do the steps.

I also am one that really had to change people, places and things. It has been a tough road but it is so rewarding!

Welcome, Peter!

I drank for 12 years, and tried to moderate my drinking for... 12 years? The whole moderation thing just didn't work for me.

What DID work for me was getting sober, and I got sober through the help of the amazing people in Alcoholics Anonymous. This forum is a great supplement to AA, where you can vent and connect with people when you're not at meetings.

I've been sober now for four months (officially, tomorrow), and was able to get through many hardships, including the end of my long-term relationship, without drinking, thanks to the incredible people on this forum and in AA.

I know for me, when I was trying to cut back, or stop periodically, I'd sign up just for an online support group, but when I was feeling weak I'd just sneak away, and go back to my old ways for a few months before crawling back.

Anyways, if you're looking for an ear, feel free to message me on here. I'm more than happy to listen & help!

<3

It took a few goes for me.

I think I finally started to realise that if I did not drink, bad things would not happen.

Two statements were profound for me

1. I have regretted drinking many times. I have never regretted not drinking'.

2. If I don't pick up the first drink, I can't get drunk.

They are really simple, but it took a few years to really apply them to my life and my drinking behaviour.

I did start to dramatically cut down.
I started having more alcohol free nights.

I wanted the alcohol free nights more than the drunken nights.

I still don't feel like I am missing out by not drinking.

I also hated that feeling of waiting all week until friday for a drink. It felt like I was wasting the week or wishing the week away until I could have a drink.

I can honestly say, although my life is not cute puppies and rainbows, my life is much more drama free and well balanced

I wish you the best
xx

Hello Jill,
What a lovely note. You position sounds very much like mine. I split up with my girlfiend of 10 years which was very difficult. The stupid thing is that we probably speak to each other by phone for a bout an hour a day.
Did your health suffer at any time? I have a real bout of the sweats which I am not enjoying.
Thanks again
Peter
