I went to a couple AA meetings in my early 20's. I returned for a few months when I was 39. I believe I had only found "recovery" as in finding my true self and a returning to whole...about 6 months ago...stopping my drinking occurred within that time. I'm 46.

I first 'found' recovery when I was 25. Prolonged the misery until now, 34.

I first quit when I was 43 and stayed dry for over thirty years. Then, a few years back, my wife of over 50 years was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis; a progressive and fatal lung disease. We started having a few glasses of wine in the afternoon then: it was time we could share and provided a pleasant interlude in the day. After about a year she was accepted into a lung transplant program and a few months later received a pair of donor lungs. She is doing great. But, my drinking progressed back to where it was when I quit the first time. I'm about six months dry now but still struggle with the notion that I can go back to being a social drinker. Wouldn't it be lovely! I realize that it is out of the question but in my weaker moments I still give it some consideration.
