6/13/13 The day I finally quit

After drinking since age 13 or so I have had enough. I am in my early 50's now, and as I think back over the countless hours and days completely gone to waste either intoxicated or suffering from hangovers, it makes me sad, and mad.

There is so much I have missed, so many times my wife has looked at me with quiet anger and disappointment, so many stupid choices made while drunk.

I'm leaving that drunk part of my life behind now, hoping it is not too late.

Welcome whipster! It is definitely not too late. I was in my 50's too when I decided to end my romance with alcohol.

I figure I spent half my life under the influence. I don't know why I was so afraid to let go of it. It brought me nothing but pain and humiliation in the end. It feels wonderful to be free of it. Glad you are here with us.

Welcome to SR Whipster! Congratulations on your commitment to sobriety!

It's never too late! I'm in my mid forties, and I was feeling similar when a friend of mine told me, "You're just beginning the second half of your life!" Every age in our lifetime is precious and getting sober is a fantastic new beginning. I'm realizing that being sober, I'm now able to experience things with the clarity similar to when I was a child. It's refreshing and a great gift to give to yourself.

Congrats and glad you are here!

Thank you for the nice messages.

I found this site by looking up 'Alcohol detox symptoms' for some weird headaches and light-headedness that is hitting me since I quit last week. I did notice the dull ache that had started up under my right ribcage a few months ago has lessened, I have to think my liver is telling me something.

I share your regrets my friend over wasted opportunities in my wake. But let's make the best of the rest.

It is not too late. I can attest to that. Once all the poison gets out of your body, you will love how clear minded you are.

Blessings

I, too, agree that it is never too late. I am in my late 40's and have been clean slightly over 6 months. Glad you are here!
