Good Lordy is't easier to drive 50 miles for a meeting
When I relocated to Houston yrs. ago
from my hometown of Baton Rouge where
I got into recovery, I went to any lengths
to stay sober even if fear and anxiety
parallized me quite often.
I left my recovery support system that I
was just getting use to and relied on for
about 7 yrs. as I began to lay a strong
foundation in recovery to live my life
upon for each sober day.
Houston, unlike Baton Rouge, was huge
and spread out. I recall having to drive
a long distant to make noon meetings
so I could be available for my kids for
the rest of the day and night. I had to
get my AA medicine each day in order
to face lifes difficulties that I use to drink
over just to survive.
As I found myself flying to AA meeting
during lunch rush hours in the middle
of millions of cars, trying to arrive safe
and sound to my meetings. Then, I realized
I didn't have to put myself in danger or
drive my anxiety thru the roof that could
cause more harm to my health than needed
and decided to stick to the meetings close
to home that I didn't really like to get what
I needed to remain sober that day.
Then, a light bulb went off in my brain to
search for recovery online to fill in those
days I didn't want to venture outside my
home and kept me safe from the dangers
of driving on those busy Houston streets
and highways.
Anything I could use to be an aid to help
me get my AA medicine for each day I
wanted and needed to remain sober for
myself and my little family.
That was sometime ago as I eventually
returned to my hometown of Baton Rouge,
my comfort zone, my familiariety and AA
family and support I left yrs. before.
Recovery isn't always easy and takes constant
vigilance, and maintenance in order to remain
sober and live a happier, honest way of life for
yrs. to come. For me, at 22 yrs sober, one would
think, why do I still need a recovery program
if I already know how to stay sober. Well, I do
have those tools and knowledge of a recovery
program I learned in early recovery, but just
like as we get older, we need to daily maintanence
to look and feel healthy. Just like an older home,
fresh paint and trimming the older hedges are
also needed in order for it to look nice.
Just because I have an old car, it doesn't have
to look bad or not run if I keep it clean and get
a tune up from time to time. Recovery is the same
way. Just because I'm 22 yrs sober, and not drinking,
life still those me a curve ball and my biological
time clock continues to tick, I still have to get
a check up and maintanence in order to feel good
mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
I want to live a healthy, honest, sober life each
day and a recovery program built on a strong,
solid foundation built with steps and principles
to live by can help me maintain that happy, joyous,
freer life without alcohol a day at a time I remain
on this Earth.
So can you.
