Gout and Recovery

Hi Everyone,

I am sober and happy after a short relapse last week. Doing well, and working out a lot, eating clean.

Here's the thing. . .I have gout (haven't seen a doctor), in my left toe/foot where I suffered a bad break 6 years ago. It is painful. I am sure that my drinking was either a big contributing factor, or exacerbated a predisposition.

So I am walking around with a constant reminder of what I did to myself physically. I am trying to view the pain as a reminder of why I can never go back. At the same time, it is a source of shame.

Here's my question I guess. . .has anyone dealt with gout? I understand it is chronic, but has it gone into remission for those who suffer from it?

I KNOW I need to see a doctor, and right now I am treating it with herbal remedies and drastic diet changes.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/advice.

I suffer from it periodically...it's pretty rare now I'm not drinking, though.
These days simple Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) help me - advil or sometimes aspirin.

Its best to check with your Dr tho - just to make sure it is gout - and they may have better, targeted, ideas for treatment for you.

D

I have gout but haven't had an attack in over 12 years.

I have to take a daily dose of Allopurinal, but it keeps it in check. It's a pretty cheap medication and WELL worth it. I suggest you look into getting yourself a prescription. It's a miracle drug for gout.

Diet changes and nothing else worked to rid me of gout until I got on this med.

a friend of mine had it
it seemed to come and go with him
when he was drinking hard it would really come on at times

Thanks Biker. You know it is funny, since I wrote about it this morning, it seems to be fading away. Maybe following the gout diet IS working.
