This place is just incredible

First time posting.

I read this site several years ago, when I started to realize that I needed to quit drinking. Members' comments were like a mirror on my own thoughts and struggles.

But, like so many others, I kept drinking.

In December 2012, for lots of reasons (mostly because I finally accepted that one or two drinks ALWAYS resulted in way too many), I finally decided to hang it up.

Since then, I have visited these forums many times. I can honestly say that if it weren't for the heartfelt posts here, I would have started drinking again.

Just today I started hearing that sinister voice telling me that life would be more enjoyable with alcohol. Instead of pouring a drink, I came here. I found a few threads where people with decades of sobriety under their belt reminded us newbies how big of a mistake it is to give up on sobriety.

THANK YOU to everyone who writes to keep the rest of us strong. I'm ready to transition from a reader to a contributor here.

This site has been a very positive force in my life. I come here daily to read, and to absorb what I can. I know that I am not alone in my mission. I'm glad that you have joined, and I am looking forward to hearing more from you.

Good to meet you, Breck! I know exactly what you mean—when I first found SR, it was a revelation to see so many people who had gone through such similar experiences.

Nice work! When I first quit, I wanted to somehow silence the voice. Things got a lot easier for me when I realized it was OK to hear the siren song, it's to be expected during the early days of recovery. The point isn't to silence it, but instead to just do what you did—recognize it for what it is, and see drinking for what it is. Someone here told me, "It's just a feeling. It can't actually hurt you." That was a big idea for me... but looks like you've already figured it out for yourself. Great post.

Yup - this place help me face the fact that I'm an alchy.

Once that bridge was crossed it also helped my get the tools to stop drinking.

Oddly enough, my big break came in trying to tell someone else they should be totally committed to sobriety. It was then that it hit me -- I wasn't totally committed! Ha!

Fancy that.

Here's the video I was posting for them that actually hit home for me when it comes to total commitment.

Ah, Breck, and what a great post that was!
S R saved my life and is still saving my life. At 15 months sober I am still not out of the woods. But I can see the light now in the distance. Thanks to SR's lifeline.
Congratulations and welcome.
