The Guest House
by Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

I really appreciate this. This is similar to something a friend told me at the beginning of my relationship with my AXBF... That in loving someone with everything you had, you had to be ready to accept the highs and the lows-- the good and the bad. I didn't know the had would be addiction... But in terms of recovery, this is so true, too. I'm ready to feel the highs and the lows, if I haven't all ready begun to do so. It hurts, but I know it's for the ultimate good. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem.
Rumi is my favourite Sufi poet and this is my favourite poem.
Indeed, life has taught me to embrace every situation, every emotion, every happenstance that comes my way because each brings its own gift...a lesson learned, an achievement of overcoming an obstacle...each joy and each sadness come with strangely wrapped blessings and I am grateful for every one.
Thank you for posting this today, for the reminder that life has a plan for me and it's all good if I pay attention and find the beauty along the way.
Hugs
