Day one for me

I've been drinking heavily all my adult life, about 20 years. Last 2 years has been daily half bottle of spirit plus at least 1 bottle of wine. Not surprisingly, been have problems with all this so for the first time, am going to try to stop. After 2 days of tapering, it's 8am on the morning of day one. Wish me luck and thanks for reading xx

Thanks. Have been worrying and thinking about stopping for ages. This is the real attempt. Two nights of terrible dreams and sweats during the tapering. Will just get through the day today and see x

Welcome back! It's never too late. As long as you're still breathing it's not too late.

Never too long. It took me longer than that, over ten years after I went to three good AA meetings. At that point I wasn't ready. This time I was

I gave quitting a half-hearted shot fifteen years ago. Only last year did it sink in that I had to quit or die. Congrats on coming back to the fold and best of luck to you on quitting. If you stick with it it will be the best decision you've ever made!

I went to my first AA meeting in 1991. 22 years later I joined SR after a hellacious bender. It's NEVER too late.

You can do this!

Thanks for the comments so far. I may well check in again tonight, when the going gets tough. My body is already looking forward to its first drink of the day. Which would normally have been in about an hour

In the days before internet, I kept a journal and that was the only record I have of my long-time struggle with drinking and quitting. All the way back in 1993 I knew I was drinking too much and should quit.

Didn't stop until 2010. So I know all about waiting. I also know about letting opportunities slip away. Don't let this one slip by you.

Welcome New Life! I'm only on day 5 here after 20 years of daily drinking myself and feeling much better already...withdrawal has subsided. Hang in there...you can do this!

Great decision New Life. I spent years planning to give up tomorrow, and so having one last splash to get the urge out of my system. Glad you'be made the decision to give up today rather than tomorrow. Hang in there - the early days aren't fun but you only have to do them once.
