Wet brain diagnosis

How can I find out if I have the beginning of wet brain? I am 66 years old and have been drinking and binging since I was 35. Is it possible to have a CAT scan to check this? I am new to this site. Many thanks.

EEG, ECG, EKG, Cat Scan, MRI. Full blood work.

You will know after that.

The best thing is to talk to your dr and ask him what you need to do.

I remember when I was in one of the court ordered alcohol classes hearing about "wet brain". The instructor said that people who were permanently damaged could not move their pinky finger away from the rest of their fingers while keeping all of their fingers together outstretched. Everyone in the class immediately held out their hand with their fingers together and moved their pinky. I dont know if he was serious or just messing with all of us. We were in there for second drunk driving arrest. Anyway, I could move my pinky without moving the rest of my fingers. Yay for me, right?

Welcome to the site Flaxen! Sounds like you are concerned about the consequences of your drinking. This is a great site to find support and information on! I hope you continue to post. What are you thinking you might do to stop drinking?

Welcome to SR flaxen.Do you want to stop drinking completely?

You will need to ask your Doctor about your concerns.

My Mother had a wet brain.

Welcome Flaxen
If you have concerns, seeing your Dr is the best start

For sure, ask a doctor. But from what I have read, if you had wet brain chances are you wouldn't be able to post here, let alone turn on your computer.

I think when we first get sober we have everything, at least in our wet or dry brains. I know when I first got sober I had every affliction under the sun. I just had to read about it, and I got it.

Welcome to SR.

There's at least two other members here who identify as wet brain sufferers who post regularly.

That suggests to me there's a lot of gradation in the diagnosis MB...but I'm no doctor.

Tyhank you ALL so much for your response to my query about wet brain. I did find some very useful information and as I have only been sober (this time) for 2 days, I think I have every affliction under the sun!! I think when I stop drinking that I have every other disease as well as alcoholism, so it made me feel better to realise that other people have had the same silly thoughts too! I also reduced my medication of prozac from 40mg to 20mg and spoke to the doctor 3 days ago and she said it was ok to go back to my original does, so I think that will help me too. Its been great reading all your responses and I shall try to get myself to a local meeting too. I've been backwards and forwards to meetings over the years so I guess they are all sick and tired of seeing me there. But onwards and upwards and you have cheered me up no end. Thank you all!!

have no fear
many are in the same boat
my home group here in Lakeside is " The Jump Start Meeting"
I came in and out of there so many times over the many years
it does not matter
a lot of times these thoughts are only in our own minds
I'm sure many there will be very glad to see you return

Me too!

I'm really glad you brought this up! I have a lot of silly "diseases" that go away when I'm drinking.

I even managed to convince myself that as long as I drink once a week my low blood sugar issue goes away.

In reality, it's just the alcohol doing a darn good job of convincing me to stay drunk.

This will be my 3rd day sober - you have all been a HUGE help and as I have never been on site before, I find the words of support so encouraging. It's similar, though better, than a diary I used to write all these thoughts down in, as I get a response from what I am worried about. I'm keeping my life at a slower pace and now refusing to go to parties where I am expected to drink. I know this may be retreating from friends etc., but I still feel 'afraid and shy' without that drink, to give me 'dutch courage' that I may have before I leave to go or when I get there. I hope I may be able to become stronger once I have been a couple of weeks sober and then start 'socialising' again, though I do get so frightened of these events. Any support/ideas on this would be appreciated. Thank you all so very much once again.

that is a good plan for now
after being sober for a while I was uncomfortable at a wedding I attended
before long there I has a beer in my hand
why push it
some time alone or maybe in an AA meeting with others in recovery
is good for us while we are getting adjusted to our new life
the main thing is not to drink
I would do anything today as needed so as not to put myself in harms way

I stayed away from social events where alcohol would be the focus for a while Flaxen, much longer than a couple of weeks.

I needed to put clear distance between my old way of life and the new one I wanted.

Thats not to say you need to be a hermit - there's a lot of things you can do without involving alcohol - but I think it's good to be discerning for a while.

Don't rush the process - a few days back you were terrified of wet brain It's ok to take things slow - you can stay away from the social scene for a while..we drank for years...we don't get 'better' overnight
