First Time Counseling
Hello, all. I am new to this site, and am blown away by the positivity I've seen so far.
I have a question with which someone might be able to help me. I am uncomfortable with the amount of alcohol I consume. From the research I've done, I seem to fit into the category of one who abuses alcohol. I have made an appointment to meet with an alcohol abuse counselor- the "best" in my area. She does not accept insurance, and charges just over $100 per weekly private session. Whereas I am fortunate enough that I can afford this type of treatment, would I get the same thing by going to AA?
Any suggestions?

Hello, and welcome to SR
The main thing is. Do you want to stop drinking? Only you can answer that. A lot of us here have tried everything imagineable to control or moderate our drinking. It didn't work, at least for me.
AA can be a great place to start, what you get out of it is what you put into it.
I only have 16 days of sobriety, after 30+ years of abusing alcohol, however I can tell you that my life is already turning for the better.
Good Luck and keep reading here

Ken,
Thank you so much for your reply. I've never really tried to control or moderate my drinking, as I never saw it as a "problem," until recently as I approach 40. It would be best for me to stop, but I don't know if I have the desire to stop. I know enough about how we humans work, to know that I may be going through some sort of stage, such as denial.
I'm glad to see that your life is changing for the better. And, 16 days are better than none.

AA is a great place to start and to finish.
As stated, you will get out what you put in... there is no limit.
I found the answer(s) to all my problems in the 12 Steps.
I know a good alcohol abuse councilor who attends AA meetings regularly.
All the best.

I saw a drug and alcohol counsellor and it was the best thing I ever did. I tell him everything. I've told him things I've never told anyone before. I highly recommend seeing one and also incorporating a program. Be it AA, Smart Recovery, etc.
