First nightmare

So I just passed my 5 months sober
and am looking forward to my 6 months but
I had a terrible dream last night after I got home
From work. It was all about drugs, alcohol & sex.
I woke up & felt messed up, my eyes were bloodshot
I was puking and felt wrong. It all felt so real
In my dream, I didn't know what to think.

Has anyone had an experience like this and if so, how
Do I react to it?

How do you react to it?

Mark it up to real life. We all have experiences we'd rather not have. It's normal.

Welcome to normal.

Welcome to the process of drying out. I hate it when the dreams are more real than real life.

All the best.

The nightmares and flashbacks I had last time I stopped were so vivid it's the reason I went back to drinking. Since then reading more on here and seeing how very common it is, and how they do fade in time, I think will help me through when they come next time.

My mum used to say dreams are like your mind emptying the dustbin at the end of the day - and there is probably a lot of rubbish we need to throw out! xxx

It's just a nightmare, it's something we all have. Some more often than others, but they happen. It's likely it's not caused by your sobriety but caused by being human.

People who never had any addictions get them too. It's just part of being human.

If anything, it's probably your mind processing things. I once heard that nightmare were simply stress release. It might even have been good for you, maybe your mind is getting the alcohol out of your system mentally.

I saw in a documentary that after you get sober from alcohol, it takes the brain between 4 to 12 months to reboot. Maybe this was part of the rebooting process.

One thing I enjoy about my sobriety is dreams.

When I was passed out instead of sleeping I could never remember my dreams.

Now I have some great dreams. Of course I have some crappy dreams too. Those aren't usually nightmares but rather really boring dreams. Like I'm buying socks over and over again. Or doing the wash. Boooooring.

I can still recall a series of dreams I had when I was 18 and at college. At that point I wasn't even a drinker.

As others have said, dreams and nightmares are usual and to be expected. Don't let a few night-time stories freak you out x

I feel like I have the opposite experience! When I drink, I occasionally have dreams that are so real I feel like I am going to "cross over" unless I force myself to wake up. I hope they weren't seizures while I was sleeping. I always wake up sweaty and scared. I wonder what that's all about

If you are worried about seizures, go see your doc. This is not the place to take advice from for real medical issues.

Thanks. I know that. I was just thinking aloud and not actually asking anyone for medical advice, or any advice actually. The topic of dreams just really got my thinking about things I've experienced. Maybe someone has had a similar experience. Who knows...
