Day 83 Confused by Consultants at the hospital
Day 83 Confused by Consultants at the hospital
May I start this off by saying that Doctors and Nurses deserve medals for the work they do! They've got so much on and have to deal with a Holes on a daily basis.
But we've seen 5 different consultants about my Dad with different opinions on him and now I feel confused!
We got told they'd get him better no problem
Then he was on his death bed
Then his Kidneys have failed too along with his Liver
We were told to prepare ourselves cause he's got little chance of surviving
And finally the latest Consultant is he's got an infection and soon as they can clear that up they will deal with his Liver.
I just wish they'd agree and then tell us
So confused!!

I've been there, done that, with my second husband. Liver and kidneys shut down, comatose, doctors said IF he survived, he would DEFINITELY need a liver transplant. When he finally got well enough for a liver biopsy, it turned out he had EARLY cirrhosis and would be fine if he quit drinking. Sadly, he went back to it.
There are limits to what can be known with certainty, even by experts. It's very upsetting not to know whether you are saying goodbye and planning a funeral, or preparing for a long and difficult recovery.
Keep staying strong--83 days is awesome!

Forget everything they have told you.
Take a good look at him.
How old is he?
How is his general health?
How was his pre-sick health and lifestyle?
What kind of help is he getting now to stay alive?
Ventilator? Heart drips? Bloodpressure drips?
How long has he been "down"?
Is he conscious?
If he is in ICU, talk to the ICU doctors.
The liver guy is only looking at the liver, the hematologist is only looking at his bloodwork, the kidney doctor is only looking at his kidneys.
If he needs a transplant, he doesn't qualify because of drink.
Has he had an "epiphany"?
Has he turned over a new leaf?
What do you think?
I have seen a lot of people be mislead by doctors who mean well and people who just won't listen when told the prognosis.
Lastly, ask an experienced nurse on the ward, off record, calmly, what she/he thinks.
Hope this helps.
And, no matter what happens, even if your arse falls off,
Don't drink!

Yes.....My husband has a chronic illness so we deal often with Dr's and hospital visits at least 3 times a year. Never having been sick or had a family member sick it has been an education. Here is what I have learned.
1) Its not like it is on TV.
2) It takes awhile to figure it out. Our insurance dictates the manner or treatment. Therefore many useless tests have to be performed first before they get to the real tests that might tell what is wrong.
3) It takes awhile to get the results of the above tests. It may take a day to a day and a half to get the results of an MRI.
4) All hospitals and Dr's are not the same. There are many people in the medical field who have no business being in it.
5) People who have illness due to alcoholism and addiction are treated differently an overall "snubbing" of these patients is common.
There are some things you can do. A patient needs an advocate. You can question, you can request specialists, you can request to speak and see the Dr., You can talk about treatment plans and options and push for further testing. You can get online and research what you are dealing with so you have a further understanding of the illness.
Nurses are the ones who run the show. They are the ones who make things happen - establish a good relationship with your nurses they WILL push the Dr's to do things. Nurses are angels from heaven.
So sorry, and I hope you get some clarity soon on what is going on.
