if only

Hi everyone, I just wanted to tell you all about something a psychologist told me about my drinking a while back. I cannot believe this man is a certified psychologist. I think everyone will be baffled as I was.

He said, "You just need to notice when you start to feel a little sick or like you've had too much, and then stop."
Really!

So....can anyone here do that?!

That's why I love this site, because we understand each other! I guess it takes one to know one.

Did you let him know he clearly didn't understand a thing about alcoholism or addiction?

Made me think this:

"How many time people have said to us: “I can take it or leave it alone. Why can’t he?” “Why don’t you drink like a gentleman or quit?” “That fellow can’t handle his liquor.” “Why don’t you try beer and wine?” “Lay off the hard stuff.” “His will power must be weak.” “He could stop if he wanted to.” “She’s such a sweet girl, I should think he’d stop for her sake.” “The doctor told him that if he ever drank again it would kill him, but there he is all lit up again.”
Now these are commonplace observations on drinkers which we hear all the time. Back of them is a world of ignorance and misunderstanding. We see that these expressions refer to people whose reactions are very different from ours.

AshleyNickel, I couldn't stop. Seeing professionals for advice is tricky business, so be careful.

Takes one to know one.

This one just so happens to know many!

And I agree. The many on SR know me.

That's a warm and fuzzy huh?

Just because he is a psychologist, doesn't mean that he's an addictions specialist. The field of psychology is pretty broad, you probably need to do a more focused search.

I never felt bad while drinking, in fact I
enjoyed the way it made me feel. That's
why i drank. To feel better for feeling bad.

Of course, once i had my enjoyment and
the party was over and had to return to
reality, i was already drunk.

Who the heck wants just one drink. Or
2. Well, not me. I realized there was never
enough alcohol in this world to satisfy my
cravings for it. That why I am an alcoholic
in recovery keeping my alcoholism at bay
one day at a time for the past 22 yrs.

I believe it takes an alcoholic to know
one, no matter how much schooling one
has.

LOL, proof positive that even with a medical degree doesn't mean you understand addiction.

Yes wouldn't it be nice if we could just control or stop when ever it was good for us!
Lord knows this site wouldn't even exist!
We could all just "fix" ourselves overnight!
