Dry Drunk Periods?

I'm just becoming familiar with the idea of the "dry drunk" times...

When they are "irritable, discontent, and..." something else too...

During these times when he's not using, I see him doing other addictive things like playing video games for hours. Eating a package of Chips Ahoy cookies in two days. Eating tons of ice cream. Staying up super late.

Is that what we're talking about?

How about the depression and just kind of general malaise that he goes into during this time?

What else can you tell me about these dry drunk times...when the addict is not using, but is not in active recovery so they're not enjoying sobriety yet?

And am I understanding the concept correctly that it's not just enough that they're not using, but basically until/if they are in active recovery they may just continue to be funked out a lot of time and trying to do something to manage themselves as they white knuckle it through to the next time that they just can't help themselves and use again, eh?

Hi shine bright,

Not sure if this will help but I created a thread a week or so ago, asking what people thought "dry drunk" meant.

I got a ton of responses. Very informative.

Maybe you could look at that thread for some info.

There's also a very thorough and informative 4-page definition of the condition at Dry Drunk, What is a dry drunk, Alcoholics Anonymous, AA,Meetings,Drinking problem,Alcoholism,Alcoholics Anonymous, AA,drinking problem, addiction,Alcoholic help, alcoholism help, treatment, addictions, support, drugs, drug additon, drug additions or Google Dry Drunk, Alcoholics Anonymous. I lived with one for 5 years and wish I had had this info at the time!
