Things Addicts SAY from Jail
~cynical one

1) THIS time is it/I'm done
2) I'll do ANYTHING you want if you go back with me/help me
3) You can hold all my money
4) I'll go to meetings/treatment
5) Give me a break
6) Work with me on this
7) I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
8) I want to quit, but...I can't do it without you
9) I know what I have to do
10) You drove me to use, I'm worse now because you put too much pressure on me
11) Don't abandon me
12) I need you as a friend
13) I wouldn't leave you in jail/abandon you if you were here
14) I don't belong here, I'm an addict, I'm not a bad person
15) I need to stay clean for myself
16) I'm getting too old for this $hit
17) I don't want to use
18) I've found God
19) I have a long climb ahead of me to get out of this pit I've dug for myself
20) Look at the damage I have done to (fill in the blank)
21) I am so far in debt, I owe so much to so many people who have helped me
22) I want to be respected and will have to work really hard to earn that respect back
23) I will do anything to make it right
24) I am going to kill myself.
25) I am so lonely in here
26) If you were the addict, and had this disease I would stick by you 100%
27) Forget the past and look forward to our future together.
28) I'm so ashamed
29) I will change
30) I'm hungry, can you put some money on my books

Heard pretty much every single one of those, except the one about finding God. Never having been to jail myself I really bought every line he fed me. I figured how could jail not be anybodys rock bottom. It's jail for f*** sake!!
How naive I was. I love that I now know better. I love that my life is peaceful and I am the empowered person I am today. I am happy and content. To anybody out there that is sad and miserable and giving up on a happy life because they want to spend it with an addict, I say please think about that and I urge you to reconsider. Hope I'm allowed to say that.

Damn, I've heard most of these in my own kitchen.

Maybe he just thought he was in jail because I was such a great warden!

I was angry when my AH made bail. Amazing medical news - you can get sober after 4 nights in jail from smoking crack (so he says). Even more amazing news, smoking crack can help others file for divorce after 9 months of watching the drama, when they decide not to live it anymore.

My ex said EVERY one of these things to me through the years. And I HATE to think of how many times I actually believed them. And unfortunately, they were said in my home. I wish he had been in jail....I might have escaped sooner. I allowed all of those promises and pleas to be my own jail.

the addict oath:

I'm sorry
Please forgive me
It will NEVER happen again
(repeat as often as necessary)

the last line is usually said with emphasis. and much visual sincerity, often accompanied with tears.

But why? To keep their enablers?

my addict loves to spit the bible at me when he is using "judge not or you too will be judged" and "let him without sin cast the first stone" or how about " don't try to remove the splinter from your neighbors eye (drugs) when you have a log in your own (codependency) " and then the classic "all have fallen short" and "no temptation is not common to man" blegh... how in the world did I pick up an addict Jesus freak... -_-

Great thread

How about, "It's your fault I'm here. If you were more (INSERT ADJECTIVE) I wouldn't be in this mess."

The only problem is that if someone really meant and intended to do some of these things and quit they'd be screwed as far as trying to tell someone as no one would believe them.

I wouldn't either but just sayin....

Usually to that kind of stuff I just say a deadpan "Okay" and try not to roll my eyes, lol.

This would make a good sticky.

Add: "You're the only real friend I ever had."

Can also be said in kitchen, on porch, in car, because, yes, the addict wants to keep the enabler.

But why? To keep their enablers?

it's a recipe that is one part remorse, one part hope (I'm done!) and one part attempt to get out of the doghouse and back into good graces as fast as humanly possible.

Many addicts & prisoners find God in jail. The truth is that it is an escape mechanism. Every prison will have a "jailhouse preacher". A jail experience may or may not be a persons rock bottom. Some folks will continue to use drugs & homemade alcohol while incarcerated. Others will look at the jail experience to eat, sleep and get physically healthy. Jails are not rehabs and usually offer very little for a person to change.

It all goes back to the piano, you fell in love with his ability to tickle your ivories! Did you know that a Tuba can be used as a modern piece of furniture?

I've heard "I feel everything is going to change now, but there's no space for us there"
