I was in such a dark place when I was getting sober. Seeing people who got sober and stayed sober while going through a tough time is what encouraged me. It's not always sunshine and rainbows out there, sometimes there are the pits and it was good to know that you could get through the icky times too.
I clicked trust in a higher power, but it was really a combination of that, and trust in the medical community. I landed in the hospital, and they offered me a course of action. I could either trust them, or go back out and kill myself. Not many options there. I prayed for guidance, and immediately turned my life and will over to god. No room glowing experiences, but it seems to have worked excellently.

I think my deepest truth was tha I didn't trust anyone or anything to get me clean an sober... I just had nowhere else to go, nothing else to try. The NA literature probably says it best for me when it said, we found we could no longer live with or without drugs.
I'm atheist so God wasn't going to do it. My bottom was either lower than everyone's or they failed to communicate the desperation I felt - so their successes did not engender hope. Every treatment center I begged either didn't take charity cases or felt that I was too much a risk to their success rate (and hence fundraising) and so medical help was out as well. I had certainly failed enough times to deliver me from any idea that I could trust myself. ...yeah, no trust.

The first few weeks, I used the experience of others to give me hope and faith in change. Today, I trust in myself and the ability to change to my own life. Even today, looking back on the positive changes in my life and living my life well motivates and suppresses the desire to seek comfort in drinking.
I do use spiritual guidance to help direct my ship. I like to think the Eternal prefers use happy, well, and giving love.

I trusted that I was very tired of hangovers and feeling like crap all the time.
Also, I trusted my higher power would give me strength to get over myself and do whatever it took to get in a much better place.

For me it was a combo of a few. I was put in a locked in treatment facility. I had to trust they (Medical staff) knew what they were doing & helping me detox safely. I had to abide by their rules, and listen to what they said.
So it was me & God at night. I slowly learned I NEEDED him in this equation too.
With the help of outpatient, AA, those that have been down this path before & my belief that I could not do it on my own & there is a higher power to help me through this.
43 days & still believing I can do this & Stay Sober Forever!
Peace
