Has anyone ever tried...
...Non-alcoholic beer? I saw some in the local supermarket the other day and it intrigued me. Advertised as having the same taste as full strength beer, but without the alcohol (I think they boil it out or something like that).
I'm just curious to know if anyone has tried it. I've had non-alcoholic wine before. A friend of mine has never had an alcoholic beverage pass her lips in her life (amazing, huh!) so I got it for her as a Christmas present one year. That just tasted like sparkling grape juice. The beer thing seems like an interesting concept though.

oh boy.. there are a LOT of threads about this already
Personally, I think it's a ridiculous idea for an alcoholic, but as you'll see in a few minutes, we all share a lot of different opinions on it. Alcoholism and addiction nearly destroyed my life, I don't flirt with it that closely.

This comes up a lot, no surprise. I think if you look at other threads on this the general consensus is that it is a bad idea. Like a lot of issues in recovery, it is a personal decision, but it would be wise to listen to those who have tried going down this road.
I have not, for a few reasons. Firstly, the only non-alcoholic beer around these parts is still .5% alcohol. I have heard of some true 0.0% beers out there but they don't sell them here. So, it is still a beverage that contains the drug that nearly destroyed me. I want no part of it. Secondly, I believe that the journey to sobriety involves a lot of changes, including changing the expectation that a glass of frothy liquid is going to have some magical, harmless, calming effect on my brain. That is what I would be hoping for with a non-alcoholic beer. When that didn't work, what would I do next?

I never drank beer, so I've never even considered it. But I know that if there was non-alcoholic whiskey, I wouldn't drink it. I would not want to risk developing a craving for the real thing. I think it's easier for me to be happy in sobriety if I just accept I can't drink.

I was never a fan of beer but I've drank alcohol free wine a couple of times since I quit (I'm in my 10th week of sobriety). Once was out at a fancy dinner with my girlfriend, and then last weekend when I had an uncharacterisically strong craving. I'm clearly in the minority here, but it worked for me. I can certainly understand the concerns others have, though.

I was wondering if I am a real alcoholic why would I want a non-alcoholic beverage. What is the point, I drank for effect!!!!
This is as baffling to me as how someone can leave a half glass of alcohol sit.
When I try to think of ways to get back to the old habits I am just setting myself up for failure.

True dat Bi11fish -- I got me a mini fridge full of non-alc wine and beer. Would always tell myself, "that's what I'm having tonight."
I never touch the stuff, LOL.
Wonder if it gets better with age? Some of that stuff is OLD!
