woke up this morning

With a serious black eye and swollen lip. Needless to say, it was a result of the booze, so I'd like to be done with it altogether. Off to see the doctor tomorrow, but for today I'm here, and I hope to be here for awhile.

Hi everyone.

It's good you're wanting to live sober. I've been sober for three years now and they've been the best three years in quite a while.

I'm glad you joined our recovery family. :ghug3

Good on Grapes, you're in very good company here - with people from all over the world.

I'm guessing you got into a fisticuffs??? I s'pose the only upside is that the damage wasn't worse, but just bad enough to spur you to stop drinking.
Thinking of you

Grapes,
Glad you found us. Seeing your doctor is a good move, he/she, can help you if you open up about your drinking. Let us know how you're doing.

Welcome to SR - and yeah, get that stuff looked at. Amazing where alcohol will take us.

Back form the doc. The eye is fine, thankfully. In terms of abstaining from alcohol, I didn't get what I wanted to hear. Initially I inquired about medication which he said I shouldn't use, then he said to just limit myself to "one" drink and walk away. A mind game, that he himself plays with temptations. I told him that one drink is never one drink, and he seemed to think I could will myself to have one. "Everybody needs a treat Grapes!"

He's been my GP since I was a baby, and is a friend of the family, so I don't know if he's the best guy to go to with these issues. In any event, I've decided to go against the docs suggestions and outright abstain from the booze. I can't bring myself to head to those depressing AA meetings though, at least until I'm about to head to a liquor store.

Any tips of how to deal with the initial cravings? I've heard exercise and chocolate are good substitutions. Thanks again.

Welcome to SR! Your doctor obviously doesn't have a clue about addiction.

One thing that helped me when I felt the cravings was to eat a big bowl of ice cream. That always worked for me. By the time I finished the ice cream, the craving had passed. Also, you might want to do something that is not conducive to drinking, like taking a shower or going for a long walk.

Hang around here and you will find a lot of support.
