I walked into my first AA meeting four weeks today. Tonight, we celebrated 20 years of a friend I was reunited with in the rooms. She spoke of the gift of availability we get with sobriety.

I thought I was a great friend. I was available for friends. . .but only when I was sober or felt like it. That doesn't cut it. I know the difference now.

I am available now for my kids in a more meaningful way. We bake a lot of cookies, brownies, etc. I don't worry about the calories. As I read on this board, no one gets arrested for driving fat. :-)

Great post and I can sure relate to your comment about friendships. I was actually surprised when someone who I thought I had been a good friend to, told me otherwise.

We are definitely better friends sober. I remember in the drinking days whenever someone was upset we'd meet for drinks to talk or to escape. Looking back, I realize that while I was present and there for them, we didn't really help each other at all except in a "misery loves company" kind of deal.
