Should I go to the bar analogy.

Should I go to the bar analogy.

If you are new to sobriety and struggle with the question;

' Should I go to that party, bar, pub, tavern, beer bash, wine tasting, dinner party etc...!'

I've an analogy to help you;

If you suddenly found out that you had a life threatening allergy to peanuts and peanut dust, would you choose to sit in a bar that has barrels full of shell peanuts for patrons to eat?

Of course you wouldn't, as your life is far too important to risk inhaling peanut dust, falling into anaphylaxis shock and then dying on a floor covered in peanut shells.

So, I gotta ask of those struggling with this question;

'Why would you voluntarily place yourself in an environment where the very substance that threatens to destroy you, is being consumed, celebrated and slung directly before your eyes?'

On another note, if your asking that question, you already know the answer.

Food for thought.

I did it as a tool to prove to myself that I could be at parties, bars, pubs etc without giving in. Of course that was just me and I wouldn't recommend it to anybody else. I fell off when I wasn't challenging myself.

I agree though it's better for some people not to put themselves in that position.

I like your posts Xune. You have a nice way of putting things the way they are in a logical way.

OB1 has trained you well. ;-)

I think it all depends on your mentality,

I was working away from home last night and went into a pub that was attached to my hotel and had a nice meal and 3 large glasses of coke and I was happy not to be drinking as ive conditioned myself into that way of thinking.

I get what you are saying though,

It is pretty mad to be putting yourself in a position where temptation can get the better of you.

Bruno.

I think early on it's daft to go to pubs and stuff, but it's not something that need be avoided forever. I have only come to realise since getting sober that for many people the primary purpose of going to the pub is not to drink but to socialise. I guess it just depends on the place and the people. I think the advice of making sure you have a good reason for being there is a good one x
