A month with no alcohol today

Well, I'm not sure if its a month, but its 4 weeks on the dot today. I haven't went this long without alcohol for a long time. Sure I've done a month with a few drink here and there but never 100 percent abstinence. Feels pretty good. I came down to visit this girl I've been talking to for a while along with her family. It was a pretty nervous experience at times being around a bunch of unfamiliar people but I rode it out. Thry were serving wine but i didnt drink. I kept telling myself that no matter how nervous I was it wasn't going to make me drink and take away my commitment of sobriety. I also realized that I would have been nervous even if I had drank because the situation itself was an unfamiliar one with unfamiliar people. Now that the family thing of hers has passed it feels good to not be hung over or worried about if I overdid it and made myself look stupid or not. Just felt like posting about this as I have some free time on my hands right now. I look forward to learning how to manage nervousness/anxiety in unfamiliar situations better in the future (and without alcohol of course!). I hope everyone's holidays are going great, and if they things aren't going good at the moment I hope it get better for you in the near future

Congratulations, Soberish. 30 days is a big deal! Glad you made it through your get-together just fine. This event is a building block upon which a sober life can be built.

I heard it said the other day that "I've never heard of an alcoholic who woke up the next day and was glad he/she drank the night before." So very true.

Best of luck to you,
Kat

Soberish I think it is important to share these experiences "normal" drinkers would not understand how difficult it is and to go through these situations
without using alcohol as a crutch. It is really a great achievement on your part.

It is great that you are being self aware, the more aware of what we are doing the less likely we are to pick up a drink IMHO.

All the best

I dont think I've ever heard a drinker say they were happy they drank the following morning either now that I think about it.

Seeing as im most likely going to be in another unfamiliar event for new years, I would love to hear how you all cope with the nervousness of new people and new surroundings without using alcohol as a crutch. Please feel free to share your strategies.

Hey Soberish,

Congratulations on your completely abstinent first month sober. It's widely regarded that the first month in a persons recovery is the hardest so well done. And keep going.

Natom.

My solution to this in my first few months was pretty simple...If there was a lot of drinking going on...I avoided them.
