employment advice/being true
Hello all. I would like everyone's advice on a matter. I am 32 days sober after an accident and charged with dui/dwi. I am doing well and in an ourpatient program and also seeing an alcohol therapist. Very grateful. So here is my issue: I have been offered a teaching position and will need to have a background check completed. Should I share the fact I was arrested before the background check or wait until any results come back. I do want to do the "right" thing even if it means I do not get the job. But what should I do. Your feelings and thank you.......
I applied for a menial job with the activities department only after the director personally called me on the phone to apply. So, I go through the application process and gave them consent to run a background check. "Oh, beautiful!" I tell myself.
About a week later I follow-up and they said they're still looking at applicants. Geez, I didn't know this was such a high-demand position! Two days after that I get an email that they found a more qualified candidate. "Nice, again"
A week later I get the 10 page report from the agency detailing all FOUR of my DUI's from many years ago. It's pretty humiliating since it's the activities center where I live!
Yea, it really sucks that there isn't much anyone can hide any longer. But I agree with Surfn that you shouldn't volunteer any information. Although, many jobs also run a credit report (yea, a credit report for a job?!!). That, of course, is called an inquiry (aka slight blemish) on your credit report.
Good luck on your results as they may look at as a case-by-case basis!

It is individual I was an educator and went into treatment for 30 days. Afterwards my boss asked me how I was and I told her. She said thank goodness. People often know more than you want them to know.
My feeling is that if you KNOW they are going to do a background check and if you KNOW your information will come out, then I would tell them beforehand in the hope that I would come across in a less defensive manner. I would try to put a positive spin on it in any way that I could.
