How did Sober Recovery start?
How did Sober Recovery start?
I've been on here for only 3 months, but clearly we have some long time members. I find the level of recovery here strong, and that the help offered by people to each other amazing.
Is there a history of how this site started and how it keeps going? I searched but can't find anything. I'm so grateful that a "place" like this exists and would like to learn more about how it came to be.

I am sure that there is a story there. Think about it, think of the number of people that SR has helped, the number of people who now have a full measure of life because of this website. Is it thousands? Tens of thousands? *gasp* Could it even be millions? I don't get out much, but I think that SR is unique in its scope and reach. How this place came to be what it is would make good reading.
That SR narrative is tangled forever with the stories of our moderators and administrators, this group of wonderful volunteers that have given a huge part of their daily lives over to our cause. I understand that your respective modesty is one of your best qualities, but I think the story of how you came to stand for the compassion, wisdom and generosity that is the hallmark of SR would make good reading too.
How about it?

I'm amazed that there are no apparent trolls lingering around and am impressed with the charity and consistently civil discourse.
I've never been part of an online community that wasn't filled with trolls or a steady supply of viciously self righteous people.
I'm impressed and happy to be a part of this community.

Back in 1999 when I got my first home computer and could get on line from
home, I went looking for on-line sober recovery sites. I found one called
"Another Empty Bottle." Settled in their pretty good, it was a pretty good
site also.
Some of the members there, and especially Carol D told me about this site.
When AEB went, due to the owner's illnesses I came over here to start,
hopefully, settling in.
At that time it was owned by a fellow named Jon. It is my understanding
that Jon had started the site after he got clean. He lived in the Palm Springs
area and worked really hard to get this site up and running and to keep it
running as smoothly as possible.
A few years back Jon sold the site to someone else or some corporation. I
can understand why he did, as sites like this as they continue to grow and
grow, even though they are seriously needed, they can also become a head-
ache and a half!
I am sure someone like Carol D will fill in all the gaps that I have in this, lol
but needless to say I am very grateful for this site.

This is an interesting topic and look forward to hear what Anna, and the others say about SR's start.
((walkingwithgod)) - The mods get "paid" by being able to help keep SR running smoothly and always be here for everyone, but especially the newcomers. Best job I've ever had!
((Laurie)) - thanks for the info. I remembered that Jon was the one who started it, but I'm not sure if he's still around somewhere. I lurked here for a couple of years before joining, so that puts me finding SR some time in 2005?
I've seen people come and go, but am always so very grateful for the friends I've made, some of whom I've actually gotten to meet, others I've talked to on the phone or by e-mail. My family thinks "that recovery board thing you're on" is the best thing since sliced bread!
Hugs and prayers,
Amy
