After heaving drinking for a year, time to stop.

I've recently realized that my drinking has been getting way out of hand. I have been drinking very heavily for about a year now, drinking almost 750mL of whiskey a day. Went through some bad stuff, lost a woman I cared about deeply, lost my job, wrecked my car, and had to move back in with my parents as I didn't have a steady income. I turned to the bottle and I have realized that I am in no better position now than where I was a year ago, in fact I'm worse off. I use to be a gym rat, lots of muscle and pretty strong, but I've pretty much lost my strength and muscle now and have gained a lot of fat. Haven't cared at all about socializing with people, pretty much just stay in the house and drink. Haven't had the energy or the care to learn anything new and progress myself intellectually.

I have decided enough is enough. I'm 3 days sober now and I don't ever want to pick up a bottle again. I have been having some urges these past 3 days, but I'm doing my best to shut them off and I am getting back into the gym on Monday.

Anyways, just wanted to share some of my story, it's been hard but it's time I pick myself up. Hope to learn a good amount here.

Hi Magpul! Oh, to go back and think the way you are. I didn't have the sense to see what drinking was doing to me - and I just kept going. My life was never what it should have been. This won't happen to you!

Congratulations on your 3 days sober. I can imagine how difficult it was to make this decision and stick with it - but you're doing great. Glad to have you here.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! I'm 25, and a part of me is saying that it's too late for me to get into a secure position now (as far as a job and education). I've been going to college on and off since I was 18 but when the drinking and depression hit I just had no motivation to continue so I have yet to obtain my degree. I'm hoping to turn this kind of thinking around.

You are still very young, and have plenty of time to do whatever it is you want. Take some time to think about what it is you want to do. Maybe talk to a counselor to help you with the depression, staying sober, and discuss what you want to do.

I am 41, and wish I had the sense to stop at 25. Good for you for making this decision!!!

Thanks, I guess sometimes it can be a little overwhelming when I think about what I have could have achieved or done better at over these past 5 years, the only thing I can really do about it now is take it as a learning experience.

I was 40 when I quit magpul.
I've done more in the last 5 years than I did in the previous 20

keep looking forward, I reckon

Welcome to SR! About the gym, I used to weight lift alot 20 years ago before my drinking career. You should consider going back to workouts. I did, started with just pushups. Now I'm back to my old self. Confidence is coming back and I feel awsome.

Sometimes old hobbies can save
