Pretty shaming today

Went into this nearby store to buy a few basics. The owner said I haven't seen you in a while buying vodka. I worried about your shakes. When a store manager does intervention you know you had it bad. With me, with sobriety comes shame. Should be pride but it turns upside down

Fitz, be proud of yourself and how far you've come.

I agree with Anna - shame is so last year
there's no shame in leaving the past behind and rebuilding yourself

Shame isn't a nice emotion.

Be proud that in order for you to experience the pain from past memories of your using days, you have to be sober to feel it.

Without the sobriety, you wouldn't feel that way.

Consistent sobriety will run those memories into the ground and people will soon see you as who you really are.

When I recently went back to the wine store, the clerk there said "been a while". I felt shame too, but only because I'd gone in to actually buy wine. Had I met him under other circumstances, I would have felt pride I think.

Yeah, momentary embarrassment is completely understandable, but you should squash any shame associated with getting your life back on track. So the clerk recognized you. Now s/he will come to recognize the new you.

I'm proud of you Fitz and I enjoy reading your posts. You are doing great at 8 months of sobriety......and you are showing the rest of us that this can be done. You are an inspiration and there is no shame in that.

I will give you a reference letter Fitz People don't even realize what they say, and sometimes we tend to overthink. Just think about how far you have come and what you are doing in the here and now. The past is the past. You've learned some hard lessons but that makes you a better teacher and hopefully helps you to appreciate sobriety more.

I haven't been sober long. I always go back out. I keep telling myself that there is a way to stay sober, others have walked the path....that is why I need you guys, I need this forum because I've been trying for years and haven't stayed sober.

I want 90 days. I just need to focus on today........any fool can stay sober for a day right?
