Hello

I'm new here and glad to have found this site! I've been reading for awhile and i think that the support here is great. I have struggled with alcoholism and addiction for 20 years. I've had periods of sobriety, ranging from days to even years, but needless to say, sooner or later always give in to my weakness.
So i've heard (and learned over the years) the first thing to do when you find yourself in a hole is stop digging. So here's to day 3!
Have a great sober day everyone and thanks for reading

Welcome to SR.

I never struggled with alcoholism or addiction; it was quitting that I struggled with.

Years of struggle.

Been sober over two years, though, and have the members of this forum to thank for it.

Wow! 2 people in a row saying the drinking/using was not as much a hurdle as the stopping. I don't do crazy things, go to bars or any of that. I don't drink more than intended because I ration myself. But take the drink away for a couple of days and I'm not my normal self.

Actually, perhaps it's not my normal self. Maintenance imbibement of a depressant could be locking me into a depressed state. But I don't get hangovers anymore, so I don't wake up saying to myself, 'I wish I hadn't done that.'

Welcome aboard

Long time drinker and drug user here also.

Life in sobriety has offered more than I ever would of thought. And if I would of only got the things I talked about having in the beginning, I would of sold myself short.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Yes i guess i should have said that differently, stopping is just the beginning of the battle, obviously staying sober is the hard part, otherwise we wouldn't have a problem, right?
So today is day 5 and feeling strong. Hope everyone has a great day

Hi Jayde

Wecome to S.R, you've done a really good thing in joining us here, you'll get loads of support.

Just like the others, I didn't have a problem with drinking, my problem was I don't have a stop button once the wine starts flowing.

You're doing well, day 5 is good so you keep on working at it, there is a much better life waiting for you, a sober one! Join the 'class of November' and the '30 days and under' group, where you'll find lots of people at the same stage as you. Keep reading and posting, as much as you can and stay close. You can do it!
*****
JUST FOR TODAY, I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once. I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
