Hello. Just found this board and it looks helpful. I am 17 days in recovery. Going well- not missing drinking at all... yet. My fear-- there's a little voice in the back of my mind trying to convince me that all this is unnecessary and if I'm careful I can drink again when I fix all the other problems Ive caused (legal, family). I know this is not true, but I know myself well enough to know where my weakness is.

Hi and Welcome,

Yes, it's the addict voice doing its best to con you into drinking again. I think that often happens when you've been sober for a bit, and the addict voice fears it's losing for good.

Congratulations on 17 days sober!

Hi and welcome. That little voice is really something insn't it? !

Keep reading and it won't take long to see how common it is and how devastating the results can be if we act on it. Unfortunately I did on a couple of occassions. Sure wish I hadn't.

You may already know but there are lots of good programs that help to get and keep folks sober. AVRT is the one that really describes the voice that you mentioned. AA, SMART, this site (SR) and others have changed many lives too though. Hope you can find the one that works for you.

Anyway, I am glad you are here. This site has been a big help to me.
Keep reading and posting.

Hi Ims and Welcome! Some of the best advice I got was two simple words, "stay new".
I agree with other posts here-read about AVRT, REBT and AA, they all help me on my path to wholeness. Hope you stay around this site too!!

Welcome & Congrats on 17 days sober!
We all have that little voice, its what we
say back to that little voice that determines
how we will do in recovery.

It is extremely important that you remember
what your weaknesses are. Sometimes when we
have been sober for a bit we forget how crazy our
lives were while using/drinking and we start to
agree with the little voice that we could control
it and that we are overreacting with out recovery plans.

The truth of the matter is, if we could control our use
then we wouldn't have ever gotten to this point in
the first place! I always try to remind myself that
people who can control their use of their DOC don't
think about it 24/7, don't feel guilty when they use/drink,
and they sure as hell don't have internal struggles over
whether or not to quit. I always go with if you asking yourself
if you need to quit, then you do. lol

Keep going strong! You have such a good start

Be strong against that voice. The more you call it out for what it is, the weaker it becomes.

Hello IMS,

Congrats on your 17 days. Like others have said you 'addict voice' is just annoyed because you're not feedng it. I know they use the term 'addict voice' in AVRT but in AA/NA we refer to it as our addict. It's just that part of you that tries to destroy everything.

Natom.

IMS, you might be the sort of person for whom AVRT sorts out this alcoholic voice (AV) issue and the urges to drink again once and for all, for good and forever. SR has a forum devoted to this discussion of AVRT and other alternatives to 12 Step recovery called Secular Connections. There is a long running thread there with over 2500 posts for AVRT discussion. You can also point your browser to AVRT and rational recovery for some more information.

Congratulations on your 17 days too. Continue to believe in yourself and your ability to quit, and assign all doubt in your ability to quit to to source of your Alcoholic Voice, and you will do just fine. Well done!

Wow! So many responses already. I appreciate it! I am going to AA now and I just googled AVNT -- That concept does make sense to me- Thank you!

By not feeding it you've really upset your AV, in the coming weeks it's going to try and convince you of all sorts of things. Remember you are in control not it.

Hi- update-- I really like the AVRT concept. Knowing that the little voice in the back of my mind is 1. Not unique and 2. Completely controllable is very empowering. Combined with the spiritual help from AA, I am feeling confident I will not drink again. Day 18!
