Does it take a year to feel normal after quitting alcohol??
Does it take a year to feel normal after quitting alcohol??
Hi guys,
I've just come across this,
Alcohol Free: What Happens When You Stop Drinking. How Long to Normal?
I've been feeling pretty groggy and dizzy recently but I've just put it down to the time of year and possibly a virus.
Thanks for your time,
Bruno.

Hi Bruno,
How long are you off drink?
I think a lot of people are exhausted etc for the first 3 months at least.
Emotionally and mentally, easily a year.
Are you taking extra care of yourself? Food, exercise etc?

I know for me, I was pretty tired and slept a lot the first few months. But I don't recall having to wait a whole year to feel normal (depending on what normal is!). The body is pretty amazing at its ability to heal itself.
Like pippa has said the body heals really quickly. I can't say much for the physical side of it but I know your immune system probably isn't the best it could be at the moment. Stuff like multivitamins, fruit juice and bog standard fruit and veg should sort that out. On a mental level you're mind gets more clarity as the time progresses. Or at least that has been my experience.
There is no right answer Bruno - too many individual factors.
It took me a while, but it was well short of a year
Every day I'm not drinking is better than one where I was, mate.
If you feel unwell, why not see a Doc?

Really after a couple of months I felt great.. but over time I felt better and better both physically and mentally. Course, I got pregnant about 4 months in to my sober journey so there's THAT to recover from too All's awesome here after almost 4 years
I don't know if I'll ever feel normal lol
I'm feeling better after only 3 months not drinking. Physically and mentally. If it gets even better after a year that's a bonus. I will say the first two months were exhausting in every way but I still felt better than when I was drinking.
Hang in there, it gets better!

Depends on what you call normal. The exhaustion left me after about 2-3 weeks. But living normally, well, I don't really know what that is. Because I spent the last 20+ years boozing it up. So that was normal to me. I feel like I have two lives. The pre-drinking one and the non-drinking one. I think it takes a good year to get your bearings and feel totally solidified in the new life.
First month was a trip. I couldn't do anything. Second month was much better but still foggy. Third month was even better. Exercise and losing weight has helped with energy levels, but I still feel like ther is more improvement to come especially with things that I am passionate about. Every now and then I feel like I am better than the day before which makes me feel good overall. I would like to see myself weather work stress better rather than avoiding it. And I would like to be more excited about things in general. More depth if that explains it.
