Ups and downs.......
Ups and downs.......
Ugh, this sobriety thing is going to kill me! I can be all geared up to stay sober and straight (doesn't help I have a mood disorder), and then in five minutes I'll be wishing I could have that stupid drink tonight. I go back and forth all day about it, up and down, is this normal? (day 7)
Yes, its definately normal
You'll think about it, ponder over it, think you are missing out on somthing. Once you have had a while sober, it will start to become preferable not to drink. (That's what is happening to me anyway... I prefer to stick the kettle on and not have a hangover in the morning )

It's been over 14 years for me and every now and then I still want that stupid drink. But now I know how to handle and avoid it. I think at minimum you need a plan to learn how to handle it when it arises, and preferably have a whole program behind you. Or everytime you want that drink just post whatever is on your mind. There's always someone around here to help you get through it.
I am doing the same damn thing. So yes... We are normal...
Let being sober ebb and flow. Wash over you. Take no actions on what you feel. Be an observer for a while. I know they will level off. Maybe it might not be until tomorrow but they will.
Wish you all the best!

The other day I was a yo-yo with the thoughts of drinking. I will, I wont, I will, wont, will, wont, wont, will, will, wont.......I just watched this comedy take place. I didn't act on it. When I got home, I reached out here on the forum. Im much better off.
You can do this. It takes some work and dedication to remain alcohol free. Remember the reason that you chose to quit in the first place.

The mental part takes the longest to go away. I thought about drinking all the time at first. You just have to turn the obsession to drink into an obsession to stay sober. Over time, I develop a little "tool box" of things to do when the thoughts started up again. I got a lot of idea here and on the internet.
The urges can be maddening sometimes, but each time you get through one, you'll get a little stronger. Promise!

Yes. I felt the same, especially those first few weeks. After all, it was a huge part of our lives. It definitely won't stay this intense, Jen. You will begin to feel much better and more hopeful.
