Alcoholic Son's First Night Out
Tonight is the first time my son has gone out since he started AA. He is going to a friend's to watch the debate. He reminded me that he had his white chip in his pocket and he will be fine. This is his first real test.

In the end the choice is his and his alone.
If he really wanted to drink he'd find a way to do it without going out.
But going out DOES add pressure and risk of relapse, especially if drinking is involved.
I'd hope that on a Wednesday night while watching the debate there would not be alcohol but hopefully if there is he will make the right choice.
He has to start somewhere and you have to trust him to make his own decision or at least let him fall and deal with the reproductions of that.
I really hope it goes well but you can't control that.
Maybe take the night to do something you can't do when your son is around? You can't sit around worrying about him all night and wondering what choices he will make

I'm not really worrying about him. Well, at least not the obsessive worrying that I normally do. I actually believe that he won't drink even if someone there has a beer but he is an alcoholic so there is always that chance.

Good morning. I watched the debate too. Truth is I didn't even think about him being out with friends. About five minutes after the debate he sent a message and said he would be home by 11. He was. He walked in the door and walked over to me in case I wanted to do the smell test. There was no alcohol. He showed me his white chip from AA and said he didn't want to go tomorrow night and tell them he had a drink so he didn't drink. It was the accountability that helped him.
This turned out to be a test for us both. I think we both passed this one. One day at a time.
