I was hear about a year ago. I can do three days but then fail. I can do that quite often, a few days followed by a regular bender, thinking I'm good. So what.

A responder here said that I simply did not suffer enough consequences to have a full commitment. He was probably right. I have not suffered those consequences yet, but I do have a new commitment. My dry day will start today. A friend of mine has been free 12 years! I remember his problem. If he can do it, so can I. Lets kick this! I dont want to walk the fine line! I want to end my nightly six packs.

He was in and out of rehabs after a lifetime of arrests. I'm guessing it was just as the other poster said, the consequences got to him. They will me too unless I can nip it in the bud. While I dont have the consequence, most dont know I have a problem. But drinking every day tells me something more. I dont want to go there. I want to be proud of my life. I have much to be proud for lest I screw it up. I am smarter than that, but while I dont go on drunken rampages, seems I always need a drink every night. That must end.

I believe that everyone's path is different. I don't believe that some people have to hit the proverbial bottom to see another way, another path. And some people have to hit and bounce... and bounce. I have done the bouncing thing. But that doesn't mean I don't/can't see - just my path. Best wishes to you... and your path

CD great you are here. I think of it like rock climbing, you've got to three days. Now you are good at it. For me starting to feel human again was a major risk. Later one I could occasionally do more- A few times I did a couple of weeks. Six months once.

The last hurdle for me was Friday nights. I learnt and I changed.

The desire to drink can be accepted for what it is without it leading to action.

There are many people in the rooms of AA that didnt have to suffer jails, dui's , ect..

I wasnt one of them, but they are there. AA saved this alcoholic from my best thinking..

You can be free.

Fear of really serious consequences was enough to make me quit. I don't think something really bad has to happen to make us seriously commit to quitting. For me, I could just see where it was going...

There are lots of options for you if you want to be sober, most people just do it by themselves without any program. Others choose AA or any of a bunch of other methods like SMART, SOS, LifeRing or AVRT. None of these require that you hit some sort of bottom, high, low or otherwise. You can choose to quit, you can choose to make that full commitment anytime. People do it everyday, and you can decide to become one of them. It really is better without alcohol.
