Songs of Sobriety

Hey guys I hope you are all having a wonderful Wednesday!

I was just curious.

Do any of you have a song that you associate with sobriety?
Or a song that made you think, dang.. i really need to quit drinking?

Music is a very big tool in my sobriety and I was wondering if you all had a specific song.

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Great question! There's actually a thread about this in the What is Recovery? forum:

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...-part-2-a.html

Lots of variety in that thread, which suits me just fine...

Oh, no, no...I wasn't trying to come down on you in any way...I just wanted you to see the other thread so you would have some quick access to some good stuff! You have nothing to apologize for, it's a good question! I think most everything is fair game here in the newcomer's section!

Music has been a huge part of my journey into sobriety. This is one I cranked and cried in the beginning. Everyone has different tastes in music, this was not really something I would normally have listened to.
Seems like a new song pops up just when I need it most.

I'm stuck on Annie Lennox's "Why".

Some pretty powerful lyrics.

A couple of favorites of mine that pretty much run the gamut:

"Just Wait" - Blues Traveler
"Fight the Good Fight" - Triumph
"Wharf Rat" - Grateful Dead
"That's Why I'm Here" - Kenny Chesney
"Master of Puppets" - Metallica

@karilynn27 - Up until the last several days, I hadn't been a regular visitor on this site since around the first of the year, my last attempt at abstinence. I remember your daughter's quote from that time, and actually wrote it down in my notebook of inspirational words. It was great to see it again. Thanks for that!

"Life by the Drop" - Stevie Ray Vaughan and "I Was Wrong" - Social Distortion, are two other ones that come to mind. The great thing about a lot of these songs is that they are written and performed by people who have been where we are.

I’m all worried and weak
And I feel myself

Love when you can
Cry when you have to...
Be who you must

Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day we’ll all understand...
NoFireWater posted this for Jessd earlier today and it's been with me since. Great song...

Not too get too sappy, but the song for the movie money ball strikes a cord with me. The voice of that confused little girl makes me think of my daughter. In a self deprecating way the final chorus of your "such a loser dad" makes me stronger in my conviction to get myself well....Theres more at stake than just me!

My inspirational song is an old one by Jewel. The chorus goes:

"So lend your voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lend your strength to that which you wish to be free from
Fill your life with love and bravery
And you will lead a life uncommon."

Rex's Blues. Written by Townes Van Zandt, but I like the cover by Ramblin Jack and Emmylou: (Townes never recovered from alcoholism and addiction and died too young)

If I had a nickel I'd find a game
If I won a dollar I'd make it rain
If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry
And lay me down dissatisfied

I heard "Braver, Newer World" by Jimmie Dale Gilmore (my new sig) again for the first time last week and it spoke to me: (jimmie is recovered and very spiritual, not "born again" or a thumper, and is a role model for me)

Tell me now that you know how
To greet the dawn each day.
Fearless and unfettered, stand
Before the sun and pray.
There's no controversy
Let silence judge your plea
For justice or for mercy.
They both will set you free.

Both artists, especially Jimmie, are acquired tastes for sure, but a good writer can speak volumes in just a few words. Whew, I just read the last three lines of Jimmie's song again and may start my day with that consideration.
