Gross

I started tapering several months ago and did pretty well...even going 3 or 4 days without alcohol. Recently though I started back down an old path for a day or two. I just googled pics of a healthy vs cirrhosis liver and I'm done with alcohol and the ten years it has been in my life. Done.

Well, Jojo2012, tonight is the first night of the difficult first week most of us have. So just know it is not easy to stop drinking and you will have cravings, but they are only thoughts. You do not have to react to thoughts. Just recognize them for what they are and think it through. Every time you resist it will give you some extra will (for lack of a better word) the next time a thought taps you on the shoulder.

You are making a great decision to stop this now. It will never get easier, only harder. Meanwhile you are just wasting your time (and hurting a lot of people close to you) until you finally figure it out. If you are lucky you will be at the point where you haven't waited until something irreperable had been done. So, keep going....you are doing a brave thing, and I am proud of you. We really care, so keep us updated. Take care.

Maybe drinking something else that doesn't remind you of an alcoholic drink might help make it a little easier Jojo?

Hi Jojo,
Glad you are back. Moderation never worked for me either. It's easier just to give it up all together.

Actually I've never had an alcohol mojito. I'm a single mom of a six year old who hasn't seen my son's sperm donor since I was 4 months pregnant. I've historically used alcohol to "reward" myself and numb pain. A wrong way to go for sure. I've been making "special" drinks for myself this week to reward myself for being sober.

Guilt

I'm having the hardest time dealing with guilt....guilt over how much money I've wasted...guilt over lost time...it really overwhelms me some days.

Your sobriety today is whats important , guilt over the past is'nt a luxury i can afford if i want to stay sober as it builds negative thoughts that lead to drinking,

bestwishes, M

I agree with mecanix. The past is done, over with, finished. The only thing that you CAN do is focus on today, this minute, and making good decisions now. If you try your best to make good decisions in the here and now then your future will be bright. I struggle with this myself. I find my mind wandering to thoughts of how much time I've wasted. Then I remind myself that I learned many lessons along the way, many things that no amount of money can teach you. I learned to be grateful for what I have, which is A LOT considering how much damage I did to others, and myself over the years. I hope that you can think of some things that you are grateful for when you start to feel bad about the past.

God bless!
