Good things from getting sober

Hey guys, just checking in.

So yesterday I saw my eye doctor for my annual check up. The assistant who updates my file goes thru the questions, do you smoke, do you do illicit drugs, do you drink? I probably sounded funny as I said, nope, don't drink!!!

I'm quite blind, but wear contacts. He checked both eyes thoroughly and exclaimed, "Your vision has improved!". Next he goes to review the pictures of my eye they take every year to make sure my macula (part of your retina) is ok. In these pics you can see things like high blood pressure. Last year was high (go figure). Doc then exclaims, "Your blood pressure is down to normal!".

So then I tell him. That I'm an alcoholic and have 6.5 months of sobriety. By the glint in his eye, and the beam of his smile, you'd think I'd told him I was going to be the next president. He hugged me. My eye doctor hugged me.

So then today I'm inputting the food I ate yesterday. I've been cutting my calories and working out nearly everyday. About a 30 min. run on the treadmill.

Anyway, I realize I can actually remember all of the food I took in. And I don't have to try to calculate how much vodka I consumed and add that into my daily caloric intake. Weird. Weird that only 7 months ago I was soooo lost.

Everyone, have a great day!!!

You get hugs from the strangest people. I got a hug from Ted Allen at a book signing when i was on Day 74 (i think). He signed my book and i just asked him to write Day 74 on it and he asked what it meant. When i told him he awkwardly reached for my elbow. I told him "it's ok hon, you can hug me!" It was a kind of awkward hug but it was a hug! I realized later he's probably a germophobe but whatever. I hugged Ted Allen, lol!

Something else that's really cool is being able to do good for others. Now that i'm sober and much healthier, i'm able to donate blood again! I've already donated once and have an appointment to donate again tomorrow. It feels so good to be doing good again instead of being selfish.

I noticed I'm not nearly as judgmental or harsh to others as I used to be.

I'm notoriously hot tempered. Usually mild mannered but when i blow my top, it's big, unexpected and uncontrollable. Since i've sobered up, i've been able to keep my temper in check and it's been great! I was always embarassed when i lost my temper because it wouldn't matter if i was in public. I've made such a fool of myself in public so many times sue to my hot headedness.

I was like that when fighting with my husband. I'd act like a crazy woman. Screaming and ranting and slamming doors and hysterical crying. Now, I do get mad, but our fights are nothing like they used to be.

Remember when we were all telling you "it gets better"?

This is what we meant!

It is amazing how a million little things add up to a big life. The devil is in the details, until we throw him out!

Thanks for reminding me to appreciate those important details.

Cinder, OTT and Itchy:

He had me cracking up. When he walked me out to the lobby area, he said, so nice to see you again, and congrats. With a wink. Pretty funny.

Strange too how much I've grown in so little time. A few months ago no way would I have had that conversation. But now, I'm at peace with it. It is what it is. I'm an alkie. And that's ok.

It does get better! I can't imagine going back. As things get better and better in my life, I know that going back to drinking would throw it all in the toilet. Can't have that.

Your story inspired me. Glad I checked in before I went to bed for my 3rd sober night in a row. Looking forward to my health improving.
