Not sure if this is a great quality but it's one that I have seen in all of us...

EGO

When I came into recovery I was just an all around awesome dude. I was funny, quick witted, great worker, great golfer, great husband, etc...

BUT...

Catch me on another day and I was the worst person in the world. I am lazy, didn't make enough money, wasn't good looking enough, was misunderstood, not apprecaited, taken for granted, just couldn't do anything right, etc...

What I've learned about me is my ego goes both ways. Very high and very low. The truth is neither are true. In recovery I base my self worth on what I do, not what I intend to do. At the end of the day I look over the past day and look for where I was short with someone, or rude, or inconsiderate. I take a quick inventory and if I need to make amends it do. Most days I don't.

I am so grateful that my ego is much more in check today than it was in the past.

The way I understand ego is it's the voice in our head that tells us we're different. Either better than or worse than without knowing the facts. It's the part of me that distorts reality and fills me with all types of fear.

Not sure if that's the "clinical definition" but that's how I think of it.
