Possible connection between anxiety and gastritis?
Guys,
Anyone got checked for gastritis after you started having panic attacks or extreme anxiety?
Im 27 male and was drinking heavily for 1.5 years until i got my first panic attack around half a year ago. Tried to go back to drinking a couple of times after it, but anxiety was killing me afterwards.
After my last try about 3 weeks ago when i just had two beers, i had a really heavy/bloated stomach and anxiety next day then i was heaving it after every meal, went to see a doc and after endoscopy was diagnosed with gastritis.
Im not sure but i have a feeling that it somehow connected to my anxiety.
Now I have been sober for 2 weeks and started taking gastritis meds. Will see if anxiety goes away along with gastritis.
Anyone heard anything about connection between anxiety and gastritis?

Yes gastritis can be stress related. I've had 2 cases of it... one from drinking heavily a few years back and more recently once whilst 7 months pregnant so zero alcohol but a very stressful time for me.
It can also be caused by drugs such as ibuprofen (anti inflammatories) as they can upset the stomach lining.
Well done on 2 weeks, definitely keep off the alcohol and things will improve. I assume they have ruled out an ulcer?

Yeah, no ulcer.
I still have not decided for myself if i want to stay away from alcohol forever, I hope anxiety will go away after gastritis is healed and i will be able to have a couple of beers once in a while.

Every time I relapse now after a day or two I simply cannot drink quickly enough due to extreme stomach discomfort, could be bloat, gastritis, pancreatitis or whatever, but it seems to be because I am terrified of the state I know i'm going to be in, in a few days, but still can't stop.....so resort to hard spirits to fight through it, which makes things worse of course. Nightmare
welcome
Anxiety and stomach issues are connected for me for sure, but I kept drinking and eventually my stomach issues remained independent of whther I was anxious or not
Alcohol simply does not help gastritis.

For me the drinking caused the anxiety and caused the stomach problems.
Did you tell your doctor about your drinking Alex?
I had terrible anxiety caused by alcohol abuse which pretty much disappeared after a few weeks sober. I'm 30 and I never suffered from any anxiety til my late 20's and it only got worse as I carried on drinking. Someone on here called it the beer fear. Perfectly describes it for me
Welcome to SR Alex.

Alcohol disrupts the lining of the stomach and the other gastrointestinal organs. It changes the pH balance and makes it so we can't absorb vitamins and minerals properly. anxiety and depression go hand in hand with alcoholism.
Best wishes on fast healing!

Gastritis and anxiety are BOTH symptoms of the alcohol abuse. I had both, I took alcohol away and both symptoms disapeared. Caffeine can irritate your tum too so I had to cut back on that, all the best

I had a weird issue where sometimes I would feel gas bubbles run through my chest and my anxiety would go nuts because the gas bubbles made it feel like my heart was having problems. Once I figured it was the gas I was like Whew! [
I totally share in your pain. In the big book of AA it talks about all the different ways we try and control our drinking by changing from beer to spirits and then spirits to wine. It doesn't help. The only thing that damages your body is the alcohol. It doesn't matter what form it comes in. I know because I've already tried all that. Now I know for 100 percent certain that every time I drink the post drinking anxiety gets worse and worse. I am one of those that wished it didn't because I love to drink but I think anxiety is the bodies was of saying ENOUGH YOU IDIOT!! I'm not calling you an idiot but I think you get what I'm saying. Good job on your sobriety so far. Keep it up.

Thank you all for your posts, its good to know that im not alone on this. It feels sad that i wont be able to drink again without having anixety, im only 27 and some of my drinking days were really good stupid anxiety
I used to think that too Alex. I was so annoyed that I even suffered from any anxiety because it wasn't something I ever had a problem with before.
But now I am incredibly grateful for my anxiety. It was trying to tell me that something was very, very wrong. Anxiety is not the worse thing drinking can cause, it's just a precursor to a whole host of health problems. Some of which can kill you. I was lucky enough to come away with a bit of nerve damage. But that in itself probably wasn't bad enough to make me stop, the anxiety was and I'm very grateful for that, as it helped give me the kick to get out before I did some more serious damage. Seeing as you've already stopped, you may want to keep it that way

I had some great drinking times in my youth. I tried to carry them on, got myself into a complete downward spiral and here I am!
You can do it Alex. Your body is already telling you it's too much and 2 weeks is a great start You probably won't be able to drink again without getting gastritis again in the near future, anxiety or no anxiety.
There's quite a few posters here about your age. Have a look around and see how they are doing. I wish you all the best
