Is it possible to stay sober without AA?

I've been sober for over 5 years using alternative methods and I feel great!

I tried AA for 18 years and could not put together more than a few months of sobriety.

For those of you having a tough time with AA, there are other methods including SMART Recovery, The Sinclair Method, and LifeRing that could help you.

Don't give up! You can do this!

Well, I wasn't on the alcohol side of things (though I was still told to go to AA), Gunthar, but I'm also clean and sober with no program of any kind. I'm sure it's possible! I did it.

Of course its possible and many of us here use no formal program. I do however rely on sr.

Hi Gunthar.
I don't do AA myself, I gave up due to liver and health issues (alcohol related, obviously) I use that as my higher power, AV basher and common sense provider to stop me from picking up again.
I have nearly 10 months now. Not long, I know, but because I've practically been at deaths door, I don't want to go back and knock on it again in a hurry!
SR has been great too. I need a reality check every day. It keeps me grounded.

It looked like a question - but I'm glad you found your answer Gunthar

If you look around you'll see there are many methods at play here on SR and many many people happily in recovery - we look for respect for all paths here

I didn't use anything but SR myself but it saved my life

Hello again...rather an odd question iMO

You are doing it...and evidently pleased with your sobriety.
That's a good thing.

AA clearly states it's not for everyone...nor has it ever run a
membership drive...

Many of our members are also successfully sober following
all sorts of concepts ideas and methods.
I realize you are new to our site...please stick around to meet
members who are also doing great!

Glad you are too...

Anything works if you follow the guidelines. I think everyone is looking for the best way to quit for them as individuals, so it's really hard to compare programs because they are individually interpreted and applied.

I didn't go to AA or any other formal recovery program and I'm 8 months sober. For me, it took finding the right reasons to get sober and remind myself of those reasons every time I feel like having a drink. I also told myself that failure and relapse are not an option...but that's just what worked for me. I also found a lot of strength through SR! To be honest, I would rather interact with people on a forum rather than in a meeting some place, but to each his or her own

Congratulations! Five years sober! I do find your question curious though. Why the sudden urge to ask such a question? I see you are new here, welcome. Stick around here long enough and, you will see many people do and do not attend AA meetings. Judging from your post, you have found your answer. That's wonderful. Many here have not. In the end it can be different for us all.

10 months sober, first try. There will only ever be one attempt for me at sobriety, this one, but that is another story.

I dunno, went to AA about 10yrs ago but it wasn't for me at the time. Carried on drinking harder and faster since then. Maybe I should have gone back again. Anyhow since joining SR yesterday at a really low point, I've not had a drink and I feel inspired to go back after seeing how the remarkable people here are doing with or without AA, I'm going to try again atleast I won't be in the pub but I will be out of the house.

Yes, doing the work whatever that is. Sobriety isn't a present it is is living in the present sober. It's not necessarily a gift but it is a well earned wage, and the pay off is golden.

Depends on who the person is. Some people can get sober and stay sober without AA, sure. (I don't go to AA, for example; I come to SR for support and fellowship)

But for many, many people, AA is the only thing that has worked to keep them off the sauce.
