TOPIC: Staying Sober and Enjoying Golf U.S. Open
Any golf fans out there in SR land?
I remember getting interested in golf
in my early recovery days. After going
to many meetings, I found myself being
drawn to men who loved playing golf
in their spare time. I'd eves drop in on
their conversations and wished I could
have the knowledge of golf like they had
so I could join in.
So, I began watching golf on the weekends
and began learning the players names
and picking up on the lingo. That was 21
yrs ago and today I am still sober and still
a fan of watching golf on tv and am excited
about this weeks U.S. Open Championship
with soooooo many awesome, exciting players
making their way around the course rooting
for my favorite to be first. Tiger Woods..!!!!!!
Who will be watching the championship
this weekend while staying sober?

I'll watch some...Between Red Sox games...I'll root for Tiger too...It's like he's an underdog and the greatest golfer I've ever seen. I'm learning to play....I'll never support myself doing it....But it's a blast smacking them around.
Never did I ever be soooo excited about
watching golf in my life like I have today.
And to watch it sober. Then, i dont think
I would have watched it when drinking
because it would have been to slow or boring.
Watching golf and going outside to check
on my birds and flowers with Ben & Jerry's
Pistachio ice cream to look forward to later
on today. YEAH..!!!!

There are sooooo many good players that
I hope will entertain us, like Bubba...lol
Mikelson lost his first ball yesterday in
the trees.... maybe he'll get it
together today along with Rory McIlroy...lol
Since Ive been watching golf since 1990,
im glad to see many are still playing as
long as Ive been sober. Sergio, Toms,
hmmm, i didnt see Furik now that Im
thinking about it....hmmm.... Els, ....more
will come to mind as I watch.

Have you considered learning to play golf? We have several sober groups who golf regularly. That and the softball team and the bowling team....
It's the kind of fellowship that is priceless!
Enjoy your golf, Sharon!

I haven't tried softball in my lifetime. Yet.!
My dad was a little league baseball coach
when I was young and I sat in the dugout
sometimes to keep score. I also loved
to pitch and catch with the hard ball hitting
hard in my mitt. Right in the pocket. Whew..!!!
I remember the burn. Loved it.
My dad also played on a bowling league for
many yrs, too, and in my first marriage before
i got sober we played pairs in a league too.
That was during my drinking career and birth
of my 2 kids, before getting sober in 90.
Well before that, I remember in High School,
the class boarded a bus to the bowling alley
where we bowled for PE class. At that time
I really enjoyed listening to the music played
on the juke box. 1970's...lol
Of course it was nice when I got a strike or spare.
So many stories, experiences, strengths
and hopes in my 50ish yrs of life.

It is a great sport as we cheer
on our favorite player.
I like so many of them, but only one
will be the winner. Who will it be?
Is there a favorite for you? Who is it?
Tiger will begin playing this afternoon,
and would love to see him win, but like
us in recovery, there is no guarantee
he will win unless he works well
with his game like us working our own
recovery program.
That's the way it works if they and we
work it. Now what about the bbq lol
on our favorite player.

Yes I love it!!!!!!!!!! Growing up on The Woodland TPC, I have been a golf fan since a child. And watching it a playing sober is so much fun. When I got out last year and played sober for the first time since I was young, it was just like I was 14 again. Just the love of the game. Thanks for the post.

I been thinking about your question about who to route for. And I really never do, I just look forward to a close battle Sat, and specially Sun.
Having played The Olympic Course we are in for a treat. Does make me miss living in San Fran. though.

The only golf I ever played was when I
was a child and my family vacationed
in Panama City, Fla. and we'd go out at
night to play fun golf. I think I enjoyed
it but dont remember if I ever beat anyone.
Anyway....
I'm glad you got back to playing, esp. now that
you are sober and enjoying it. What an awesome
feeling it must be to be out on the course swinging
a golf club with the sun on you and the joy of a
beautiful day around you.
What a GIFT..! What a BLESSING...!!!
Right now, Tiger is the lone leader at the top
of the board....YEAH TIGER..!!!! and look forward
to seeing who makes the cut for the weekend.

Day 3 of the U.S. Championship Saturday
and the cuts have been made and many
players were sent packing. The rest are
ready for the next leg of the challenge.
Top 3, Woods, Furyk, Toms at the top
Many good shots yesterday with some funny
stuff too, like Sergio on the 3rd, taking out
his frustration on the ground microphone:rotfxko
Im looking forward to watching so more
good golf today and seeing who can maintain
patiants on a tough course.
What was your favorite shot on course
and who did you think played well so far?
