Most likely the alcohol is making you depressed (I know I did for me). You also mentioned commitments to your family... don't you think staying sober would be a great commitment you could make to your family? Please don't give up. Do you honestly think that if you continue to drink your financial problems will be solved?

Financial problems? Try calculating how much money you spend on alcohol in a month.

Hi Tom, I am sure you can keep commitments to your family & spend far less sober. It's hard but you can do this... Just don't give up.

It sound like you are really reaching out. Please call your sponsor and tell them what you are feeling. Or get to a meeting right away.

All problems are solvable. All problems will go away. Drinking only makes them unmanageable. If I don't drink they become manageable.

Tom,
Don't ever think that you can put off sobriety until problems are solved.
The FIRST thing to do, is quit drinking.
Everything else is just money and crap.
Start today. One day at a time.
We all had to start with a single step.

It doesn't matter if you're not in it 100% yet Tom. You can learn stuff by being here which may help you. Things do not have to be all or nothing.

The depression may well be caused by alcohol...it may not though so maybe seeing a doctor could help.

Just make small positive steps every day.

I hope you stay here xxx

To this very sound advice, I would add, don't ever think that solving other problems will get you sober. Problems don't cause addiction. Addiction causes problems.

How about becoming a famous recovered alcoholic?
Hard to get a job drunk.
They seem to get alarmed when you do the interview drunk in pajamas.
Go to sleep if you can and try again later.
Can you call anyone? AA hotline? Sensible kind friend? Family?

To live a happier life you have to be prepared to do nothing.

Once you face the fear you find it cannot break you.

Even famous alcoholics can recover if they are willing to do the work involved.....

we are all just flawed humans with our own set of strengths and weaknesses....

Stick around! or get to an AA meeting and learn how to get well.

I never been to a AA meeting because I am not sure about my decision yet... I always wanted to be a social drinker not stop drinking forever....Does it really work for someone who is not religious?

I thought the only way I could deal with my many problems was to drink too Tom, but drinking never solved any of my problems - it just made them worse in the long run...

Getting sober was hard...but no harder than the drinking life I had - it was considerably easier actually - the main problem for me was to deal with feeling uncomfortable...it's downhill all the way once you master that

Rich or poor famous or not - it doesn't matter Tom

Recovery will help both your depression and your financial problems I promise - and you'll be in a better position & headspace to deal with all yr other problems too.

Don't let your fear of change hold you back - I hope you'll decide to go for it soon

D

I am NOT religious. Today, I can say I am spiritual and something out there helped me to change my perspective. Something that was experienced as a result of working the steps of AA. Find someone who really knows how to take another through the steps. It does help.

xa-speakers.org take a listen to several speakers.

Heck yeah!

At the first several meetings, our self perception is low, so we often see what we feel, after that, we start listening, find a sponsor, and work through the steps. Every meeting can be very different than the last. If you don't go, you won't know if it will help or not. I hear the word "god" and just think about my own conception of a power greater than me. When I did work through the steps the first time, that is when change took place and my conception of a power greater than me was more real, although I don't define it to anyone. Spirituality, now this is new!

If AA is holding you back, there are other recovery options such as SMART or AVRT. If you want information on these, send me a PM, or at the very least Google them.

famous alcoholic? are you a movie star?
either way, getting wasted more and more is not going to give you energy for anything, except make another trip to the liquor store.

you should try making some kind of a plan how you can stop drinking but not go insane from the pressures of reality. I suggest seeing a doctor first. extreme anxiety can be dealt with in different ways. alcohol makes it only worse.

give it a try.
