Taking car keys from someone who wants to drive drunk - enabling?

I know some will say it's enabling, but what about the fact that other innocent people could die because of the A drunk driver's decisions? I think the A has to face the consecuences of his/her actions, but not if it could involve another random person getting killed.

I don't know why anyone would consider that enabling. More people should be willing to take the keys from an obviously intoxicated person. Drunk driving kills.

I did this, and it got me badly beaten by a drunken alcoholic in a rage. So, proceed with caution...looking back, I would have greatly preferred that he ended up in prison for a third DUI...although I know he could have killed someone while drunk driving... then let myself get assaulted. It sounds heartless but I would never again risk leaving my children motherless due to domestic violence.

I myself have called the sheriff on my ex who hopped in his vehicle drunk and I'd take the keys in a heartbeat and would not drive him anywhere.

My friend just wrapped his car around a tree last night driving the 500 yards from the bar to his house because he had been drinking. He broke his pelvis in several places, and it will be at least 3 months before he will walk again. He is lucky to be alive.

If it is safe for you to do so, please take and hide the keys!! I am just glad he only injured himself.

It's not always safe to physically take keys, but if it's not possible to prevent someone from driving drunk, a call to the police is in order.

I wouldn't hesitate to shop someone who went out to drive drunk. I'm not going to have some dead kid on my conscience.

I agree, I don't see this as enabling at all. I have done both-taken car keys away, and when that didn't work I called the cops. Gave them a heads up on drunk driver-description of vehicle, plate #, general location. Too bad he made it home before they caught him. Thank God he didn't hurt anyone.

if you can't take the "loaded gun" that they are pointing at innocent people out of their hand, then I would say call the police.

It's not enabling. A good suggestion: call the police.
