Day 1

Hi there

I quit drinking today. I have before (for a year), but that was to prove to everyone around me that I am not addicted to alcohol.

Today I have realised that I am an alcoholic. I cannot only have one glass of wine with dinner... I need to finish the bottle. This happens on a daily basis.

I would love to be a social drinker, But I have tried this before and it hasn't worked. My husband is threatening to take our children and leave me - I cannot blame him as I have disappointed him too many times.

Today is the start of the rest of my life.

Unfortunately we would ALL love to be social drinkers, but that never seems to work out. I'm glad to hear you're making this choice for yourself now, before your husband leaves. You'll be happy you did.

You've done this before for a year... You can do it again!! Keep coming back, there is A LOT of support here.

I have been reading on SR A LOT today! Amazing how many people are in exactly the same boat as me! I know I will be able to stop drinking - that is not the problem... The problem is quitting for long enough and then thinking I am strong enough to hqve a social drink. I am not!! And will NEVER be.

I will need all the support I can get from you guys!

Thank you in advance!

If you are cold turkeying, you may want to see a doctor for appropriate detox.

Welcome to SR!

Welcome Pattipan!

It's amazing how much our stories have in common, isn't it? I've gotten so much support and inspiration here - and learned different ways to beat the cravings, too. Just coming here and reading every day keeps me in the right mindset.

It's great to have you along on this journey!:ghug3

It's weird that, before today, I always denied that I have a problem. I always told everyone I drank because I wanted to, not because I had to. For some reason today was just the final straw... I am affecting SO many people that I love with all my heart, which makes the fact that I want to drink and hurt everyone in the process such a sad situation to be in! It was my choice, until today, to hurt the people I love the most. I feel so guilty about this and wish I could change the past. Still not sure why I am the way I am? Why can some people have a drink or two and be fine with it and I can't?

Hi Pattipan,

Keep reading SR. You will see a lot of us have struggled with guilt, wanting to re-do the past. And in the beginning many of us just don't get why we can't be social drinkers (and some (like me) tried again and again to become social drinkers - with disastrous results).

Through reading SR you will see our stories are different, but are really just varations of the same thing. We want to drink excessively because we are alcoholics. Ofcourse it goes deeper than that.....keep reading. Best wishes. Take care.

Hi Patti:

I found I could quit and stay quit in the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous.

All the best in your chosen recovery program.

Welcome to the family Patti! I went through that cycle for years - binging, then sobering up and thinking I could use willpower to control what I drank. It never worked. No such thing as a glass of wine or one beer for me.

I'm glad you're feeling encouraged by what you read here. It feels so good when we realize we're not alone in this. Congratulations for making this big decision, and welcome to your new life.

i could have aglass of wine with dinner...and then finish another 2 bottles. i could have written your post myself.

in time i hope you'll realize too that is just too exhausting to try to moderate.
